🔥🚒 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2026 — 580 CHILDREN REACHED! 🚒🔥
It's been a busy week of fire prevention, education, and fun!
Throughout Fire Prevention Week, members of the Mecosta Township Fire Department and Morley Area Fire and Rescue have been visiting schools throughout our communities, sharing important fire prevention information and teaching children how to stay safe in the event of a fire.
Together, our firefighters had the opportunity to provide fire safety education to 580 children!
🏫 Morley Stanwood Elementary School: 411 students
🏫 Huntey's Clubhouse – Morley: 43 children
🏫 Local Amish Schools: 126 children
That's 580 children learning important, potentially lifesaving fire safety skills!
During our visits, firefighters discussed several important fire safety lessons, including:
🔥 STOP, DROP, AND ROLL! – If your clothing catches fire, stop moving, drop to the ground, cover your face, and roll until the flames are extinguished.
🔥 STAY LOW AND GO! – Smoke rises, so stay low to the ground while escaping a building filled with smoke.
🔥 GET OUT AND STAY OUT! – Once you've safely escaped a burning building, NEVER go back inside. Leave that to the firefighters!
👨🚒 GETTING TO KNOW YOUR FIREFIGHTERS!
One of the most important parts of our school visits is helping children understand what a firefighter looks and sounds like when responding to an emergency.
Students had the opportunity to see firefighters put on their full protective gear, including their Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
With our masks, helmets, protective clothing, and breathing equipment, firefighters can look and sound quite different from what children are used to seeing. Our goal is to help children become familiar with that appearance and the sound of our breathing equipment so they aren't frightened if a firefighter ever needs to help them during an emergency.
Of course, we also made time for one of everyone's favorite parts of Fire Prevention Week — the fire trucks! 🚒
Children were able to see some of the apparatus and equipment our firefighters use when responding to emergencies throughout our communities.
🏠 PARENTS, HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP AT HOME!
One of the most important things you can do as a family is to develop and practice a Home Fire Escape Plan.
Your family's escape plan should include:
✅ Two ways out of every room, including bedrooms. This could be a door and a window.
✅ A designated meeting place outside, a safe distance from your home, where everyone knows to gather.
✅ Practicing your escape plan with everyone in your household so they know what to do if a fire occurs.
Remember, a fire can happen at any time, and practicing your escape plan BEFORE an emergency can make all the difference!
🚨 LET'S TALK SMOKE ALARMS! 🚨
Working smoke alarms are one of the most important tools you have to protect your family.
🏠 Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement.
🔋 Smoke alarms with replaceable batteries should have their batteries changed at least once a year, or sooner if recommended by the manufacturer. A great way to remember is to check them when changing your clocks for Daylight Saving Time! Changing the batteries every six months is a good routine for alarms that use replaceable batteries.
📅 Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years! Check the manufacturing date on the back of your alarms. If they're 10 years old or older, it's time for new ones!
🔊 Test your smoke alarms at least once a month to ensure they're working properly.
