In many South Asian families, men are often expected to be the steady ones. The providers. The protectors. The ones who โ€œstay strongโ€ no matter what they are carrying.

But strength should not have to mean silence.

Mental health struggles can affect fathers, sons, brothers, partners, friends, and community leaders. Sometimes pain shows up quietly through withdrawal, anger, exhaustion, overworking, or pretending everything is fine.

This Menโ€™s Health Month, we are making space for a different kind of strength: the strength to talk, to ask for help, to rest, to heal, and to be supported.

Check in on the men in your life. Not just when something seems wrong, but regularly, gently, and without judgment.

The first, and, often times, hardest step is reaching out for help.
If you or someone you know is affected by mental illness, we can help.
By calling the SAMHIN HelpLine, you will speak with a trained staff member or a mental health clinician to receive support, guidance, information, and, if needed, a referral to a culturally-competent mental health clinician in your area.
All calls to the HelpLine are confidential.

*Please note that our HelpLine is not a crisis hotline. For immediate mental health help, please call the Su***de and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to reflect on how we show up for ourselves and for one another.

For many in the South Asian community, asking for support can feel complicated. Family expectations, stigma, cultural pressure, and fear of judgment can make people feel like they have to manage everything quietly.

But support does not have to begin with having the perfect words. It can begin with listening, checking in, making space, and reminding someone that they do not have to face their struggles alone.

At SAMHIN, we are committed to building spaces where South Asians can speak openly, feel supported, and find community through difficult seasons.
