The Appalachian Geopark Initiative seeks to unite the rich regional coal heritage of southern West Virginia with the diverse geological interests (kurst) in the area together with outdoor recreation and tourism. WHAT IS A GEOPARK? A Geopark is a single, unified geographical area where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of education, su
stainable development, and conservation. Its geological heritage, in connection with all other aspects of the area’s natural and cultural heritage, enhances awareness and understanding of key issues facing society, such as using the resources sustainably. By raising awareness of the importance of the area’s geology – from both a historical and present-day standpoint – a Global Geopark gives local people a sense of pride in their region and strengthens their identification with the area. The creation of jobs and high quality training courses are probable, as new sources of revenue are generated through geotourism, while the geological resources of the area are protected. The Geopark concept is relatively new, creating a great opportunity for West Virginia. There are none in the U.S., but over 125 worldwide, including two in Canada and two in Mexico. What is the purpose of a Geopark ? While a Global Geopark must demonstrate geological heritage of international significance, the purpose of a Global Geopark is to explore, develop, and celebrate the links between that geological heritage and all other aspects of the area’s natural, cultural, and intangible heritages. What changes in the area? The UNESCO Global Geopark status does not imply restrictions on any economic activity inside a Geopark where that activity complies with indigenous, local, regional, and/or federal legislation. WHAT ARE THE AIMS OF A GEOPARK? The primary aim of a Geopark is to bring enhanced employment opportunities to the people who live there. These opportunities are being created in association with the conservation of the geological heritage of the Geopark. WHAT’S THE ROLE OF WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY?
