Libera groups create connection 💜

When young people have a safe place to share their insecurities, struggles, and their wounds, they often learn they are not alone. That others in their group, have similar chapters in their story.

These similarities create connection, understanding and hope.

That’s how one participant felt after a Libera group at the Vicki Douglas Juvenile Detention Center in Martinsburg, WV.

When asked if the Libera group helped change the way she felt about her peers, she said “I feel closer because now I understand them better.” 💜

That’s what listening does. Creates the safety for youth to share their stories, be validated of their experiences, and build connections with themselves and with their peers.

Libera has spent over 10 years training community members to show up for girls and young women. Now, we want to help our partner organizations support the mental health of young men. And YOU can help.

If you've ever wanted to make a real difference in the life of a young person in West Virginia, this is your invitation.

Being a Libera Mentor doesn't require a degree or a perfect story. It requires a willingness to listen, show up, and believe in the young people around you.

"Don't give up on your kids."

These six words were spoken by a young woman in our program who knows firsthand what it feels like to be given up on and what it feels like to finally have someone believe in her.

Her journey through the foster care system was hard. But when she connected with a Libera mentor, everything changed. GED ✅ Stable employment ✅ A future she's excited about ✅

This Foster Care Awareness Month, we're embracing the theme Engaging Youth. Building Supports. Strengthening Opportunities, and her story is exactly what that looks like in real life. We honor every young person who has navigated the system — and every mentor, social worker, and community member who refused to give up on them.
