Monongalia Arts Center (MAC) is a non-profit arts and culture center serving Monongalia County and surrounding areas. MAC offers classes in both the visual and performing arts, as well as houses the Benedum Gallery, Davis Gallery, Tanner Theatre, and a gift shop featuring unique gifts and artwork from various local artists. Come learn about pottery and get your hands dirty in our Ceramic Hand-Building Workshop on Saturday, October 24, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. In this class, our instructor, Shannon Griffiths, will demonstrate a variety of hand-building techniques, and students will practice by making plates, bowls, pots, or other ceramic items. Students with no experience are welcome, but this class is also great for those with some experience who wish to expand their hand-building knowledge!

Students will pick out their preferred glazes, and items will be ready for pickup the following week. Tickets cost $60 per student, and tuition includes one extra session in our Maker Space (pottery studio included!) so students can continue their project or start a new one!

Calling all youth who want to learn to draw! Join us for our Kids Drawing Class on Saturday, October 17, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Our instructor, Jessica Pugh, will lead students through the building blocks of pencil drawing so they can learn new skills and improve the ones they already have.

Our project in this class will be drawing a stack of jack-o’-lanterns to practice seeing everyday objects as their basic shapes and to improve sketching skills. Through this project, students will become more comfortable drawing and more confident in their sketching.

We have availability for our Ceramic Pumpkin Workshop on Saturday, October 17, from 10:30a.m. to 11:30 a.m.! This is a great opportunity to create your own fall decor. We have new times for our Screen Printing Course! This course will now meet on Wednesdays, October 14, October 21, and November 4, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Monongalia
Arts Center in Morgantown, WV.

The first class will include a demo, a hands-on project using pre-made screens, and time for students to plan and sketch their own designs. The second class will focus on the process of creating a screen. The third class will give students time to print their designs.

Each student will receive paper and a tote bag, along with all other supplies. Enrollment includes an additional session in our Maker Space, where students can continue their projects or start new ones.

Please join us next week for our Collage Club on Tuesday, October 13, at 7:00 p.m. at the Monongalia Arts Center. We have a huge collage cart, and we want to share it with you! Facilitated by local artist Becks Lipshultz, this club meets once a month and allows participants to create and share their work in a supportive environment. There is no sign-up sheet. Just show up and get ready to have a fun time! There is a $5 suggested donation for participants who want to contribute. Meet our Improv Workshop instructor, Kunal Mahajan. Kunal is a performer, producer, and director at Arcade Comedy Theater in downtown Pittsburgh. Known for his quick wit, thoughtful storytelling, and ability to create meaningful connection, Kunal brings both creativity and warmth to the spaces he leads. Kunal began his improv journey at the Upright Citizens Brigade, Magnet Theater, and the Peoples Improv Theater in New York City.

Since moving to Pittsburgh in 2023, he has performed regularly on multiple teams, including short-form team Ready or Not and long-form teams UNIQUE and The Morning Bandits, and previously served on the Board of Directors at Arcade. He is also the producer and director of UNIQUE: An Improv Show About Disabilities and Mental Health, a reflection of his passion for inclusive, impactful performance. Trained in a range of short- and long-form improv styles, including The Armando, Monoscene, Slacker, Spokane, La Ronde, Harold, and JTS Brown, Kunal brings deep experience and an engaging presence to every workshop.

If you are unable to attend this week’s Improv Workshops on Thursday, October 8, and Friday, October 9 (both at 6 PM), it’s no problem. We’re also holding more classes next week on Thursday, October 15, and Friday, October 16!

What to Expect:

Thursday, October 15: Short Form Improv Comedy (6–8 PM)
- Rapid-fire comedy games with short scenes, big laughs, and instant creativity.
- Dive into quick scenarios with twists and challenges.
- A supportive space where every idea counts and everyone is welcome.

Friday, October 16: Long Form Improv Comedy – True Hollywood Stories (6–8 PM)
- Lights, camera, scandal! Ever wonder what really happened behind the scenes of a celebrity’s
rise to fame, spectacular downfall, and inevitable comeback?
- In the True Hollywood Stories long-form improv format, you will create larger-than-life
characters and outrageous stories inspired by the over-the-top world of celebrity
documentaries.
- Using an audience interview as your jumping-off point, you will build a fictional celebrity’s
life story, from humble beginnings to fame, fortune, scandal, heartbreak, and beyond.
