Starting March 6th, we’ll be gathering the first Friday of the month at noon to discuss The Painful Truth about Hunger in America.

The Painful Truth about Hunger in America, Mariana Chilton shows that the solution to food insecurity lies far beyond food and must incorporate personal, political, and spiritual approaches if we are serious about fixing the crisis.

ā€œVoices of Hunger WV is important and hits home to me because we all should have the right to food. Being a parent and having to have had to struggle with food insecurities myself I know it’s not a good feeling when u can’t feed your children or yourself. Food is a human right and should be accessible to all no matter of race, disability or class. When I saw that was the mission at Voices of Hunger I was on board to make this law. I have been on board since.ā€

From West Virginia Budget and Policy Press Release: The U.S. Senate is considering a sweeping budget reconciliation bill that would enact the deepest cuts in history to Medicaid and SNAP—programs that hundreds of thousands of West Virginians rely on for health care, food, and economic security.

These cuts would disproportionately impact families, seniors, and children in our state, threatening access to health care, food assistance, and other essential services—all to finance tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. These cuts would harm our economy, cost hard-working West Virginians their jobs, and worsen food and health care deserts in the state.

Take Action Today: Use the form in our bio to contact West Virginia’s U.S. Senators, Shelley Moore Capito and Jim Justice, and tell them to say NO to a budget package that cuts Medicaid, SNAP, and other federal programs that help people meet their basic needs.

Our elected officials must prioritize the well-being of West Virginians, not corporate interests and tax breaks for billionaires. Good policy takes time- they need to go back to the drawing board and craft a package that doesn’t require everyday West Virginians to bear the cost of tax breaks for the nation’s wealthiest households.

Voices of Hunger WV was one of nearly 60 other WV groups who signed an open letter to asking him to protect West Virginia by protecting SNAP. SNAP is essential to West Virginia’s local economies, small farms, and laid off miners and WV cannot absorb $84 million of cuts in proposal. Invitation to an international on-line briefing entitled: Rights, not Charity: A Human Rights Perspective on Corporate-backed Charitable Food Aid.

We are witnessing the rise of a permanent state of food emergency around the world, one that is being addressed through the false promise of solidarity through corporatized food charity. This briefing will illustrate the impact of the normalization of charity as a symptom of the corporate capture of global governance. We will discuss the need and opportunity for those on the front lines to come together to collectively build strategies that address food insecurity at its roots in international fora, in our own countries’ governments, and within our own local communities.

Date: October 4th, 9:00AM - 11:00AM EST.

Facilitated by: Michael Fakhri, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food

Brief presented by: Kayleigh Garthwaite, University of Birmingham and Alison Cohen, National Right to Food Community of Practice

Inputs shared by:

Graham Riches, author of Food Bank Nations

Dee Woods, IFAN (Independent Food Aid Network) and the Landworkers Alliance UK/LVC

Josh Lohnes, West Virginia University WVU Center for Resilient Communities

Sefu Sanni from the World March of Women, Kenya
