We’re taking a little break for the holidays. Our clinic directors and students got a little publicity for all the positive work for 2024! We’ll see everyone again in 2025! Veterans we are always just a call or email away.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WV News) — When the co-director of the Veterans Advocacy Law Clinic at West Virginia University is asked to describe his partner’s character, he doesn’t hesitate.

In addition to our serious work, it's essential to have a little fun time! This weekend, Mariko Moore and Chris Young, parents of student attorney John Moore, graciously welcomed us into their home for a meal, Japanese origami souvenir, and goofy pictures, giving us a reason to remember a weekend of service and this year's clinic class. Ms. Moore and Mr. Young thank you so much, the food was amazing and the gesture truly touching.

We are dedicating the weekend to supporting National Guard members. We appreciate attending the 167th's Family Day to provide assistance with wills, address legal inquiries, and engage in discussions about disability. They have demonstrated remarkable dedication this weekend. We are truly proud of their accomplishments.

Today, we're Thankful for our Co-Director, Ashley Talbott. Ashley, a disabled veteran, has spent her career advocating for Veterans during the VA Disability Process and specializes in that at our clinic. Ashley always tries to remind student attorneys to learn and then tell each Veteran's personal story. "Ash" truly tries emphasize the human aspect of what clients experience. Student Attorneys enjoy collaborating on how to improve Veterans Advocacy beyond their time in the clinic.

We constantly brag about our student attorneys, but let's take a minute to introduce our Leadership and Instructors. Today, we're thankful for Jed Nolan, Director. Jed was inspired to take on the role for the Veterans Clinic because his siblings served. Jed constantly inspires our student attorneys to advocate zealously for all the veterans in our clinic with a calm demeanor but eager and aggressive approach. Lately in the clinic he focuses more on civil litigation and supervises the students on issues from predatory lending, family law, wills, to even consumer law issues. Truly, Jed inspires the students and allows them to grow and develop into young attorneys in this clinic. Thanks Jed for all you do.

We have a lot to be Thankful for in the Veterans Clinic this week. $164,000 and $109,000 were the amounts of two back checks our veterans received this week. My student attorneys were in disbelief, a veteran truly shed tears, and I'm not too proud to say I shed a few with him. Not only do the students in this clinic learn a unique area of law, they truly change lives through proper advocacy. Jed and I could not be happier these two veterans finally received benefits they earned. We are truly proud of the hard work, determination, and compassion our student attorneys show.

We haven’t updated in a bit so: multiple decisions with backpay over $20,000 and hundreds of thousands moving forward for those veterans. The financial security that brings them and their families is life changing. More updates to come! Way to go student attorneys! Jed and I truly are lucky to have such motivated and hard working student attorneys.

Our clinic wants to Thank all Veterans today especially. Today we want to highlight our own Veterans. Student Attorneys Joseph Stradley, Hunter Burdette, and Aaron Graves all served honorably in the US Marine Corps. Student Attorney Trevor Hinkle served with the WV Air National Guard. Our volunteer Christopher Everson spent a pre-law career with the US Navy. Finally, our Co-Director Ashley Talbott is retired US Army. Thank you Veterans for your service and to you and your families for the sacrifices you made. As always, now let the clinic serve and honor you!
