The Robin Ames Foundation

The Robin Ames Foundation Look Up. Live On. Robin Ames, a life-long West Virginian, was killed by a distracted driver in February 2020 at age 37.

He was a loving husband, father, and friend. Robin had an unmatched adventurous spirit, generous heart, and open mind. He didn't know a stranger and found connections with everyone he met. Robin was always outdoors with the people he loved and was an avid cyclist, skier, rock climber, and hiker. The Robin Ames Foundation seeks to share Robin's legacy and build community through friendly athletic c

ompetition and scholarships. We will also support campaigns to raise awareness on the dangers of distracted drivers. Please join us by donating and participating in our inaugural race on October 22, 2022 at Coopers Rock State Forest!

Your life matters.
The life next to you matters.
The life in the car coming toward you matters.

At the Rames Foundation, we believe prevention starts with awareness—and small choices that protect lives every single day.

Here are 5 simple ways to stay off your phone while driving:
🚘Set it before you go
Turn on your music, directions, or podcast before you put the car in drive. Eliminate the excuse.

🚘Use “Do Not Disturb” mode
Activate driving mode so notifications don’t even tempt you.

🚘Out of sight, out of mind.
Put your phone out of reach
Glove box. Back seat. Bag. Make it inconvenient—because convenience can cost lives.

🚘Accountability matters
Tell friends or family you won’t respond while driving. Normalize delayed responses—it’s a sign of responsibility, not disrespect.

🚘Remember what’s at stake
One glance can change everything. A text is temporary. Consequences can be permanent.

This isn’t about perfection—it’s about intention.
Drive present.
Drive aware.
Drive to arrive.
Look up. Live On.

Robin Ames was killed on February 17th, 2020 by a distracted driver a mile and a half from his home. His death was 100% avoidable.

On that same date in 2021, the Robin Ames Foundation was formed. During the 5 years since our founding we have fought hard to end distracted drivingand to keep Robin's legacy alive.

The Foundation got the Robin W. Ames Memorial Act passed in June 2023 which made it illegal to use any electronic device while driving not just a cell phone and gives harsher penalties. This is not the end but the beginning and there is still plenty of work to be done on this front.

There have been thousands of runners running thousands of miles during the RAF Trail series races. Each runner connecting with Robin and his story and taking the pledge to not drive distracted.

Scholarships awarded to engineering students at and .

Currently the foundation is sponsoring a Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURE) at West Virginia University. In partnership with the Statler College of Engineering the research centers around technological solutions to end distracted driving.

The pillars of our foundation: Awareness, Education, Community, and Legislative Change

Our biggest and sincerest THANK YOU from all of us at the Board here for a successful RAF Trail Series.

We had over 280 runners, including 68 kids in our 1 mile fun run. It was amazing to see the runners giving it their all on the 50K, 25K, 10K, and 5K courses. We also wouldn't be able to do the race without our AMAZING volunteers. Thank you for keeping the runners hydrated, on the right course and events flowing.

This is a special event for all of us and our families, and your participation means the world to us. We are honoring the legacy of Robin Ames by bringing together community, one of the things he was best at.

We always appreciate all of our sponsors and donors. With your funds we are able to further our education and bring about the awareness of distracted driving.

Our timing company was amazing as always, no easy task keeping everyone situated with multiple distances and events going on simultaneously.

We will be posting the winners throughout the week.
