What a wonderful way to kick off .

D3 recognizes local AAPI community leader Mimi Nguyen, the Executive Director of Step Forward in Santa Clara County!

Mimi's story is a testament to the incredible resilience and determination of the AAPI community. From a family of Vietnamese immigrants, she has dedicated her life to uplifting and empowering marginalized voices. As the Executive Director of Step Forward, she has been a champion for social justice, working tirelessly to provide support and pro-bono Legal aid to those who need it most.

Mimi's leadership and determination are an inspiration to us all, and we are incredibly lucky to have her as a part of our community.

We’re back with an important reminder on hate crimes and what you can do to report them. Hate acts are part of an unfortunate reality, especially when events around the world intentionally or unintentionally embolden people to act on their biases and commit violence against others.

This is not ok. As community members, we are obligated to say something when we see something. In California, you can report a hate act using the “CA vs HATE” free hotline or by going online to cavshate.org.

There are many client stories, but this was the one that reminds us why we work hard and for others

Fernando* is a 14-year-old boy from a small tribe in Mexico. His mother was trafficked to the US when Fernando was of a young age and he was left under the care of his father. He was habitually abused and tortured by his father and his maternal grandmother while his mother was providing financial support from the United States. One day he was able to get in touch with his mother and told her of the horrors he was suffering at home. His mother was able to arrange his escape from the tribe and he made it to the US-Mexico border where he was admitted and placed in removal proceedings. The Step Forward Foundation was able to apply for special immigrant juvenile status, which was approved, and Fernando is now waiting for his application to become a legal permanent resident to be processed. Fernando is now living a very happy life together with his mother and sister.

Sinophobia and anti-Asian hate are related issues that impact the Asian community. Negative attitudes and discrimination against people of Asian descent can stem from sinophobia, which is fear or hatred of China, Chinese people, or Chinese culture. During the COVID-19 pandemic, sinophobia led to an increase in anti-Asian hate crimes and discrimination. The recent TikTok congressional hearing has also fed into sinophobia, as lawmakers have raised concerns about the app's data collection practices and its parent company, which is based in China. These issues have a detrimental impact on the Asian community and must be addressed to promote greater understanding, respect, and unity.
