Big news for our reentry work! Just this week, we were honored to receive funding from the Montgomery County Fiscal Court via the Montgomery County Opioid Abatement Fund to continue First Day Forward. This support helps ensure people leaving incarceration have access to guidance, resources, and hope from day one. Thank you to the Fiscal Court for investing in recovery, stability, and second chances.

Congratulations to Tammy Smallwood (left) and Ashley Martin (right) for successfully completing the First Day Forward (FDF) program in Montgomery County!

FDF is a jail reentry program that aims to connect incarcerated individuals to resources, both during incarceration and after release. First Day Forward was implemented through a federal grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration's Rural Communities Opioid Response Program (RCORP).

The program began in the Montgomery County Detention Center in 2021 and expired in December 2025, but has been sustained through funding awarded by the Montgomery County Fiscal Court through local county opioid abatement funds. Ashley is pictured with FDF Peer Support Specialist Michael McGee.

Please join us in congratulating Tammy and Ashley!

The Coalition is leading a regional initiative to better understand substance use disorder (SUD) stigma in health care settings.

As part of this HRSA-funded project, we're inviting health care providers (including physicians, PAs, NPs, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, and clinical social workers) to take a brief, anonymous survey assessing attitudes toward SUD and interest in stigma-reduction educational programming. The results will directly shape future educational resources and support for providers across our region. If you practice in one or more of the counties listed on the flyer below, we want to hear from you!

The survey may be accessed here: www.nekycoalition.org/provider-survey

Reducing stigma starts with understanding it. As part of a HRSA-funded grant project, the Coalition is surveying public officials across 17 counties to better understand attitudes towards substance use disorder (SUD) and interest in participating in stigma-reducing educational programming. Participation helps guide future training and policy-informed outreach efforts.

The survey may be accessed here: nekycoalition.org/public-official-survey

Thank you to everyone who joined us for “Why Hire People in Recovery” in Montgomery County last Friday! The event brought together employers, community partners, and recovery advocates to share best practices and real-world success stories about hiring and supporting individuals in recovery.

A special thanks to our speakers and to the Life Learning Center for highlighting their upcoming Morehead expansion—a reminder of the growing opportunities to build a stronger, more inclusive workforce in our region.

Together, organizations across northeastern Kentucky are helping local businesses thrive while offering second chances that change lives.
