At Wednesday’s Rotary meeting our guest speaker was Glenn Lamp with Hope Mission. He spoke about the Meals on Wheels program and gave us an update about the planned expansion into Atlantic Beach. The Meals on Wheels program plays a vital role helping seniors to stay in their homes and helps with the social isolation that many face. Not only makes a difference in the lives of the people that they serve, but also in the lives of the volunteers.

Our Rotary Club helped stuff bags again for Martha’s Mission’s Kid’s Bags program on Tuesday. The Kid’s Bag program sends kid friendly food home on weekends for those with food insecurities. We were able to help out with this great cause by helping fill the bags today.

The Lookout Rotary was pleased to welcome Carteret County Emergency Services Director William "Billy" Matthias II as our guest speaker on September 23.

With eastern North Carolina currently in the peak of hurricane season, Director Matthias shared important information on disaster preparedness and response for residents and families. His presentation covered practical steps individuals can take before, during, and after a storm, including developing emergency plans, assembling disaster supply kits, and staying informed through reliable emergency communication channels.

He also highlighted the county's Medically Fragile Registration Program, which helps emergency responders identify and assist residents who may require additional support during disasters and evacuations.
Director Matthias discussed the broad responsibilities of Carteret County Emergency Services in coordinating countywide preparedness, response, and recovery efforts for both natural and man-made disasters. He emphasized the importance of community readiness and encouraged residents to take proactive steps to prepare before an emergency occurs.

The club appreciates Director Matthias for sharing his expertise and helping our community stay informed, prepared, and resilient.

Mason Williams, Garry Brown and Bud Doughton, representing the Cape Lookout Foundation spoke to our club several weeks ago.

They explained the mission of the foundation is to restore the former Cape Lookout Coast Guard Station so that it may serve as a place of education and recreation welcoming any and all people open to learning about and enjoying the natural wonders of the Cape Lookout National Seashore.

Restoration

The Coast Guard Station was originally built in 1916 serving primarily as an outpost responsible for rescue services along Cape Lookout Shoals. The station operated until 1982 and has since been under the stewardship of the National Park Service. The Cape Lookout Foundation has signed a 20-year lease with the NPS affording the opportunity 1) to renovate the existing station and adjacent galley building, and 2) to organize/host educational and recreational activities available to public and private groups alike. Special emphasis will be placed on engaging groups of children and adults who might not otherwise have either awareness and/or means to visit a remote federal park.

Our club is doing a service project, Friday, October 23 at the Cape Lookout Coast Guard Station helping in its restoration. If you are interested in joining us please send us a message and we will be happy to give you more information.

* Ann Street United Methodist Church in Beaufort donated shoes for the children, with this year’s shoe donations valued at more than $4,000.
