Saturday Morning:
Registration begins at 8am
DEC meeting at 8:30am and the programs begin at 9am. Lunch will be available at noon followed by the Memorial Ceremony. The afternoon session begins at 1pm facilitated by our Be-The-One, QPR Certified Trainer and District Chair, Bri Pullen. The session will focus on recognizing suicidal behaviors and how to help. You really don’t want to miss this program!

Peter A. Hansen Post 365 and Auxiliary Revive Memorial Day Tradition in Moorhead

After years of declining membership and challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the members of Peter A. Hansen Post 365 American Legion and Auxiliary in Moorhead are working together to rebuild their organization and strengthen its connection with the community.

Like many veterans’ organizations across rural America, Post 365 experienced difficult years as membership numbers declined and activities became increasingly limited. One casualty of those struggles was the community's annual Memorial Day observance, which had not been held since before the pandemic. This year, however, marked a new beginning.

Through the combined efforts of the Legion, Auxiliary, and numerous volunteers from the Moorhead community, the Memorial Day tribute returned to honor the men and women who have served and sacrificed for our nation.

Leading the effort were Auxiliary President Jeanie Erlemeier and Acting Legion Commander Bob Queen, who have made it a priority to bring new energy and purpose to the organization. Their commitment, along with the support of community members, helped make the event a meaningful success.

The Memorial Day service featured several moving tributes. Vicar Russell Stanislov delivered the invocation, setting a reverent tone for the ceremony. Legion member Duane Renz honored local veterans by reading the names of 145 deceased servicemen and women, ensuring their service and sacrifice were remembered. Sam Johnson provided a stirring a ca****la rendition of "God Bless the USA," while Ron Anderson of Onawa performed "Amazing Grace" on the harmonica. The ceremony concluded with Eli Bowman sounding Taps, a solemn reminder of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Both Queen and Erlemeier delivered heartfelt remarks, reflecting on the importance of remembering our nation's veterans and preserving the traditions that honor their service. Approximately 60 people attended the ceremony, demonstrating the community's continued appreciation for those who have served.

A special moment during the service was the recognition of the late Frank and Carolyn Archer for their many years of dedication and service to the Legion and Auxiliary. Family members were invited to place the Memorial Day wreath in their honor, providing a touching tribute to a couple who devoted countless hours to supporting veterans and their community.

Following the ceremony, attendees gathered at the Moorhead Community Building for a luncheon hosted by the Legion and Auxiliary. The meal served a dual purpose: bringing community members together in fellowship while also helping raise funds for much-needed repairs to the Legion building's roof.

Organizers expressed gratitude for the generous support shown by residents, volunteers, and donors who contributed their time and resources to make the day possible. The success of both the ceremony and luncheon reflects a renewed spirit within Post 365 and its Auxiliary as they continue their efforts to rebuild membership, preserve veterans' traditions, and serve the Moorhead community.
