From Local History & Archives at MPL: Today we're excited to share a few new additions to our Lowrance Hospital Collection, recently donated by Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital!
Among the donations is an aerial photograph of Lowrance Hospital from the mid-1950s, showing the renovations that were completed in 1954. Behind the hospital you can see the School of Nursing on the left and the new heating plant on the right. The photo also shows the hospital’s original front entrance in the center of the building, along with the new annex and entrance on the right.
Also included is a mural created by Sherri Hager in 1999 that features many of the landmarks throughout the hospital’s service area. Some of you may even remember seeing it—it initially hung at the outpatient entrance of the old hospital and was moved to the new hospital after it opened later that year.
These artifacts—and many more—will be featured in our upcoming exhibit celebrating the hospital's 100th anniversary. Stay tuned for more details!
Do you have memories of Lowrance Hospital? We'd love to hear them in the comments!

From Local History & Archives at MPL: What Are Archives and How Do They Differ from Libraries?

As defined by the American Library Association (ALA), libraries are collections of books and/or other print or nonprint materials organized and maintained for use. Patrons access materials at the library, online, or by checking them out for home use. Libraries exist to make their collections available to the people they serve. Archives also exist to make their collections available to people but differ from libraries in the types of materials they hold, and the way materials are accessed.

Types of Materials: As defined by the Society of American Archivists (SAA), archives hold collections of records and other materials preserved because of their enduring value that document the history of a person, family, government, and/or organization. Examples include manuscripts, letters, photographs, moving image and sound materials, artwork, books, diaries, artifacts, and the digital equivalents of all these things. Materials in archives may be published or unpublished, and are typically unique, specialized, or rare--very few of them exist in the world, or they may even be one-of-a-kind.

Access to Materials: Archives have preservation and access guidelines designed to help protect materials from physical damage and theft, thus ensuring the materials and their content will remain available for future researchers. Minimizing exposure to light, fluctuating temperatures and humidity, and improper handling are critical to the survival of these materials. To learn about typical usage guidelines and more visit the SAA website at https://www2.archivists.org/about-archives.

Consider this: Checking out a book from a library causes it to eventually wear out, and the library may choose to buy a new copy of the book. Checking out the handwritten diary of a historic figure from an archive would cause similar physical deterioration, but the diary cannot be replaced, and part of the historical record would be erased forever.
