What started as an easy hike at Catawba Falls quickly became something much harder than I expected.
After already walking more than a mile through winding hills, narrow paths, uneven gravel, and stretches of thin level ground, I was feeling the challenge. Then I looked up and saw nearly 600 stairs standing between me and the top.
There came a moment when I honestly thought about turning around.
My legs were tired. My breathing was heavy. The top seemed so far away.
Then something unexpected happened.
A runner named Paul stopped, took my hand, and said, “You can do this. One step at a time. I’m not leaving you until we get to the top.”
I tried everything I could think of to convince him to continue on his run, but he wasn’t having it. He just kept saying, “One step at a time.”
So we climbed.
We stopped when we needed to stop. We talked. Paul encouraged me more than a few times, and step by step we kept moving forward.
Eventually, we reached the top.
Paul smiled and said, “Now you can say you accomplished something that you knew was difficult.”
Then he continued on his run, and I stood there reflecting on something powerful.
Most people don’t fail because they’re incapable.
They fail because they’re trying to carry difficult things alone.
Sometimes all it takes is one person willing to walk beside you, encourage you, and remind you not to quit.
That experience reminded me why Life Beyond Bars exists.
Whether you’re incarcerated, returning home, rebuilding relationships, pursuing an education, or creating a new future for yourself, transformation doesn’t happen all at once.
It happens one step at a time.
One conversation at a time.
One decision at a time.
One victory at a time.
Keep climbing.
Keep pressing.
Keep moving forward.
One step at a time.
