MIA Annual Meeting, Thursday, March 26, 2026

MIA’s Annual Meeting is on Thursday, March 26, 2026 starting at 7:00 PM at the Moorestown Library. The meeting’s program will focus on Historical Preservation in town. Many of Moorestown’s wonderful historic structures have disappeared for various reasons. Attendees will hear Julie Maravich, President of Saving Historic Moorestown and 2026’s Moorestown Citizen of the Year, who will offer a presentation that looks at photographs of old buildings town we see every day and what her committee has done to save so many of them. Light refreshments will be served. The meeting is free and open to the public, regardless of whether you’re a member of the organization.

From the minutes of the Moorestown Improvement Association, October 15, 1909, an “… appropriation of $20.00 was made for operating snowplows on the sidewalks during the coming winter.”

As the oldest civic organization existing in Moorestown, the MIA took on many tasks in the early 20th century. Apparently, keeping the main sidewalks clear of snow was one, and while we have no record of exactly how that was done, a horsedrawn plow much like the one pictured is a likely candidate.

Pictured is a sidewalk snowplow, used in Princeton around 1910. One can wonder if Moorestown’s plow was a “Planet Jr.” model, which was the farm and gardening implement manufacturer owned by Moorestown resident S. L. Allen, who used the same materials and designs to invent the first Flexible Flyer sled.
