LiveKind’s Cops & Kids program connects police officers with children to help replace mistrust and fear with understanding and empathy. Minority children can be particularly fearful of police officers, as they are more likely to have experienced a family member or a friend arrested by a cop. Rebuilding trust between the community and law enforcement is hard - but not impossible. Face-to-face interaction and the ability to ask questions in a safe environment allows both children and officers to see each other as partners instead of enemies. Conversations about race, unconscious and conscious bias and pent up feelings of mistrust and anger all help lead to develop bi-directional empathy. To help foster trust LiveKind also pairs cops and kids in a project that benefits the community. The visible partnership between law enforcement and members of the community help change the perception of police officers and officers in a positive manner leading to more cooperation and less violence.
