Today the United States Army was founded in 1775. During the American Revolution, the colonists weren’t fighting united under a single flag. Instead, most regiments participating in the war for independence against the British fought under their own flags with various symbols and slogans. In June of 1775, the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to create the Continental Army - a unified colonial fighting force.

On this day in 1777, the Second Continental Congress, by resolution, adopted the flag of the United States of America (the Continental Colors). In 1877, the first Flag Day was celebrated 100 years later. Today we honor the history, significance, and symbolism of the American flag: freedom, unity, honor, sacrifice, and national pride.

Our nation’s flag is considered a living symbol, and the U.S. Flag Code was established with rules for its display and care. Adherence to it is considered a sign of patriotism and respect, and honors our country's past, present, and future. VFW Post 3336 observes today, June 6th, D-Day - when Allied Forces invaded the beaches at Normandy in northern France during World War II. More than 156,000 American, British, and Canadian troops stormed 50 miles of beach fiercely defended by N**i German soldiers. Despite their success, some 4,000 Allied troops were killed by German soldiers defending the beaches. (Source: History, A&E Networks)

The 2nd annual Reservoir Rush 5K run/walk was a success and raised $3267 for veterans services!

Thank you to the over 60 participants who laced up their sneakers (or not for those barefoot runners!) for the event.

Congratulations to the overall winners in the men's and women's divisions, Brian Albert (East Haddam) and Ashley O’Connell (New Rochelle, NY), respectively.

Thank you Time to TRI Race Timing LLC for providing the race timing and management services, and to Leslie Carr for singing the National Anthem. A BIG ‘thank you’ to the local businesses who sponsored this event, as well as to A-1 Painting Contractors for their assistance in hanging the race banner.

Proceeds from this event went to support VFW Post 3336, as well as the House of Heroes Connecticut , a non-profit organization that provides support to veterans and their families by improving their living conditions of those needing assistance in maintaining their homes, (https://www.hohct.org/) and the Forever In My Heart Foundation Vets Valor Program, which provides service dogs to veterans with service-connected psychiatric/physical disabilities (https://foreverinmyheartfoundation.org/).

Hope to see you next year!
