In a world where news reaches every corner of the internet with just a few key strokes, we read about and see the impacts of global trauma on a daily basis. Newsrooms document critical events of sometimes mass proportions with colorful descriptions and graphic photos. Bombings, mass casualty shootings and monster-sized forest fires are served up with our morning coffee. Yet, As we go about our daily lives, the impact of what we read and see only affects us in minor and momentary ways. This is because trauma has not paid us a personal visit.
For first responders, there is a heightened awareness of the impact of human suffering. Many of them experience chronic sleepless nights and daytime recollections of human suffering at its worst. These men and women mobilize in response to victims of a critical incident, offering physical and emotional first aid. In so doing, they come face-to-face with the images and real life stories that most of us only see across the internet.
Secondary trauma is a silent killer that claims too many lives through su***de. When we read about the suffering of those who live with such pain, we need to do more than just feel momentary regret.
Join with TCC today in praying for all our first responders and their families. Demonstrate more compassion toward those who protect, rescue and defend. Ask your local church about what it is doing to honor its first responders. Contact your city government for more information about how you can get involved.
Thank a police officer or fire fighter, today, for laying their life on the line for all that you hold dear.
