✨ SLGEF Trustee Spotlight ✨
Meet Dr. Sharazazi Dyson, PhD, LPC, Chairwoman of the Sigma Lambda Gamma Education Foundation
Gamma Alpha Chapter | 2013
Dr. Dyson shares why education and representation in the Black community matter deeply to her:
“I was a first gen lower income student, who grew up on the west side of Chicago and attended under-resourced and under-funded schools. I then went on to a ‘great’ high school, selective enrollment, well-funded, respected and I saw just how vastly different my educational experiences were. And yet, I still felt unprepared for college, I didn’t have models to look to on how to ‘do’ it let alone how to exceed at it.
Education was important for me because it exposed me to vast perspectives and experiences but it also refined my own. Education gave me language for my lived experience, it gave me language to make sense of my upbringing, my environment and the systems that work to maintain and deepen inequity.
But education also gave me the language to clarify and make known my values, my principles and my beliefs and to find shared community in the struggle for liberation. Education is often limited, restricted and under-resourced for Black people but education, equitable, accessible education is necessary to go on a path to joy, self-concept and self-attunement for individuals and the larger community.”
We are honored to uplift her voice, leadership, and commitment to education and equity. 🖤
