There are over 28,000 registered amateur boxers in America. Every day, these young men and women step into boxing gyms while facing tremendous obstacles. In the ring, they have their first experiences with self-control, self-analysis, and ultimately, self-worth. For almost a half century, the American Association for the Improvement of Boxing (AAIB) has fought to keep boxing a safe, sophisticated,
and state-of-the-art sport for the amateur boxer. AAIB Scholarships provide the only financial assistance in the country to high school seniors who want to attend one of the few colleges with boxing programs. AAIB Scholars are hard-working students and community members as well as disciplined athletes. They receive funding for tuition, textbooks, and other educational needs at an accredited college or university as well as ongoing guidance from the program. The AAIB has presented sixty scholarships since their creation in 1993. Six scholarships were awarded in 2014. Fourteen scholarships were awarded in 2015. World Heavyweight Champion Rocky Marciano and Hall of Fame coach Steve Acunto founded the AAIB in 1969 to promote boxing in local communities, in the higher education system, through research, and the advancement of national standards, regulations, and legislation. The not-for-profit organization’s biggest impact today is on the lives of students. The AAIB’s all-volunteer board of directors and staff consists of former boxers, boxing judges, commissioners, announcers, referees, and enthusiasts dedicated to Steve and Rocky’s mission to improve the sport of boxing and support young boxers. One hundred percent of your donation goes directly to its scholars. AAIB donors include HBO, Showtime, Chevron, and Dow Chemical. The AAIB raised over $25,000 in 2014 for its scholarship fund with its annual golf tournament and fundraiser. We hope to double the amount available to students next year with our first online crowdfunding campaign as well as raise awareness with our new web presence at aaib.org.
