The Keokuk - Hamilton Dam compared with other dams. By Mike Foley
In the technology section there is a study of fifteen dams and power plants. They were built between 1890 and 1927. See the Keokuk - Hamilton dam in context with other dams built around the same time. Comparing size, construction techniques, locations, and purpose. Also see five Hugh Cooper projects.

Crossing the Canal
The powerhouse and lock will be located entirely in the bed of the river on the east side of the U.S. Government canal. This necessitated building a railroad trestle and draw bridge across the canal before the real work could begin on the powerhouse and lock. Photo 74, Jan. 5, 1911 has wealth of information buried deep in the picture.
Shown is not only the technique of building with large timbers, over water but also the tools used at the start of construction in 1910. Read the story by Mike Foley at http://www.mississippiriverpower100.com/Te-AcrossCanal.html

Preamble to the Great Adventure
Fortunately for us, these businessmen were mostly self- made entrepreneurs who believed that if they could conceive of something, surely they could find a way to do it. Their idea started grand enough and over a period of years grew to something that became the largest, privately-financed construction project in the history of the modern world up to that time. Geology and The Des Moines Rapids
The Des Moines Rapids constituted a serious disruption to navigation up and down the Mississippi River through the 19th Century. From Montrose to Keokuk the river was too shallow for boat traffic. Read the stories by Jack Smith at http://www.mississippiriverpower100.com/Hs-Geology.html

The Sea Monster
It was clear to all of those involved in the “de-watering” process that there would be aquatic life trapped inside the coffer dam area and as the water was lowered the aquatic life would perish and would have to be removed. The picture shows men picking up aquatic, but how big were they. Read the story by Jack Smith athttp://www.mississippiriverpower100.com/Hs-FishStory.html

KEOKUK-HAMILTON WATER POWER COMPANY: Part1,Part 2, and Part 3
While maybe not the “simplest and obscurest of men”, at least, they were simply businessmen living and working in two small Midwestern communities, Keokuk, Iowa and Hamilton, Illinois. There were twenty-five of them all together because that was the number that their corporation specified. Of that number ten were wholesale and retail merchants, four were bank officers and employees, two ran small manufacturing companies, others held political offices in the communities, some were attorneys, there was a jeweler, a beekeeper, railroad men, and a farmer. Photo #6 Jan. 14, 1910. It will all start here on the Illinois shore. Read the stories by Jack Smith at http://www.mississippiriverpower100.com/Hs-KHWPC-1.html

History Page
These articles, appearing over the next three years and culminating in June 2013, will tell the story of an amazing event in the history of not only the tri-state area but of the world — the building of our very own dam and powerhouse. Because it has always been here, nobody remembers what life was like before the dam was built. Indeed, probably nothing in history has changed everyday life in our area as much as it has. Sound Waves -
Lorene Curtis Diver lived in a house call “Port Sunshine” at 525 north 3rd, Keokuk, Iowa. She and her husband moved there in 1869 and she lived there till her death in 1922. During that time she heard all the sound of construction that took place just below her beautiful house on the hill. First the canal, then the bridge, and finally the dam and power house. In 1913 Diver wrote a booklet entitled “Sound Waves”. Read this story by Jack Smith at http://www.mississippiriverpower100.com/Hs-Sound.html
