Five Points School

Five Points School Wells County Five Points School house is a two story school built in 1876. It is located next to 5300 W. 1100 S. -90 Montpelier, IN. Goodin farm.

The original Five Points School was a log structure located closer to 1100S. The school, Chester Township's No. 9, was on the J.D. It was called Five Points because of its location near the intersection of five roads. In 1876, the Goodins and the Spauldings each donated a half acre for the school. Their intentions was for a two story building to house a school on the first floor and a meeting plac

e for the Farmers' Grange #522 on the second. Five Points School was the first brick school house in Wells county and the only brick two story one-room school in Indiana. The school remained in operation until the new Chester Township School was built 1923. It was opened briefly in 1926 when the McIntire School burned, and again in 1936 and 1937 during the construction of the Jackson Township School. After then, the school was used to raise farm animals for many years. The bell tower, out houses, and well pump were destroyed. The roof was heavily damaged by the Palm Sunday tornado in 1965. In April of 1996, neighbors Jack Pace and Kenny Meyer, began to consider the possibility of restoring the school house. The owners of the Five Points School building and property, Joe and Mary Gilbert agreed to sell the land if the neighbors could get a group interested in the project. The community response was overwhelming. In June 1997, the Gilberts generously donated the building and one acre of land to the Friends of Five Points School, Inc.

The Bluffton Parks hosted a Colonial Games event at Five Points School, and it was such a fun experience!

A group of 35 kids spent time in the schoolhouse learning how children entertained themselves back in the 1800s. They didn’t just learn—they got to try their hand at the games too, which made it even more special.

It was a wonderful way to bring history to life!

What a wonderful day at the schoolhouse! Today we welcomed the Southern Wells 4th graders for a step back in time to 1876. The students experienced what school was like long ago, learned about the history of our community, and discovered how children spent their free time in those days.

We were especially excited to have the School Marm return to the classroom this year—her first day may have been a little rough, but she’s already looking forward to many more lessons ahead!

Despite a bit of wind, it was a beautiful day filled with learning, laughter, and a touch of history brought to life.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Mary Gilbert on April 3.

Mary was such an important part of the story of Five Points School. Her generosity, support, and quiet dedication helped shape what this place has become today. Alongside her family, she played a meaningful role in preserving this piece of history for future generations.

More than anything, Mary will be remembered as a kind, loving, and giving woman. She touched so many lives with her warmth and generosity, and we are truly grateful to have known her.

She leaves behind a legacy not only in the school, but in the hearts of all who had the blessing of knowing her.

She will be deeply missed.

🌾💙 A Huge Thank You to Our FFA Volunteers, Ryan Carrol & Tricia Tucker! 💙🌾

Our heart is full this weekend ! A massive thank you to the 10 incredible FFA members and their amazing FFA teacher/leader who showed up early on a Saturday morning to help stain several of the outbuildings at our beloved 1876 Schoolhouse. Your hard work, positive attitudes, and willingness to give back to the community made such a difference.

Because of you, this piece of local history is looking better than ever. We still have two more buildings and the stair case to go, hopefully next spring we can find some more community-minded people to help finish the project!

You didn’t just stain wood—you helped preserve a story, a legacy, and a place that has shaped generations. We are so grateful for your time, elbow grease, and big hearts.

Thank you again, FFA! 🌟
You make us proud. 💛💙
