While policing has remained a mostly reactionary phenomenon, a new, pro-active technology may have a promising future. Crime forecasting is the process of predicting future crime based on an analysis of past data. Crime forecasting, especially when paired with other tools of crime analysis (i.e. heat charts, or pin mapping) may give law enforcement agencies key insights into: 1) resource allocation, 2) more efficient patrolling, and 3) reduced response times (Groff and La Vigne, 2014: 31).
