FALL FOLIAGE BICYCLE RIDE ON THE CROSS VERMONT TRAIL
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 26th
29th ANNUAL

Fun Fall Foliage Bicycle Ride Family-friendly Great Ride on a Rail Trail

The fun starts at the parking lot next to The Ballfield off Rte. 302 in S. Ryegate, VT. 9:30 AM for sign-in, route directions and bike safety check.

At 10:00 AM “We Ride”; Heading out through Groton State Forest on the Cross Vermont Trail.

Starting at S. Ryegate Ball Field riding west on the Cross Vermont Trail to the 4 corners at Lanesboro and back. This ride is about 22 miles long. You will ride under a canopy of brilliant fall foliage colors on your way past Ricker Pond, Lake Groton and on to the
4 Corners at Lanesboro, then back to the ball field in S. Ryegate.

For a shorter Family-friendly ride (Good for Family with younger children
or less experienced riders) we suggest Boulder Beach Road as a turnaround point. Making this ride about 14 miles.

We suggest an After Ride Lunch at Upper Valley Grill. Help support our local business along the trail.

Where has the summer gone? At CVTA we've been deep into construction of the remaining section of the big new trail across East Montpelier. New portions of the trail have been completed up in the woods, but are not open to the public yet.

When complete this will be the connection east from the Hidden Dam Trailhead on Route 2 (just upstream of the Winooski Bridge) all the way across town to Route 14 where the existing rail trail begins.

A big part of this - from Route 14 down to Route 2 (near the RV dealership) will be open to the public at the start of 2027 summer trail season. Then the final section alongside the river to Hidden Dam will be open at the end of next year. Now I wonder where will the Fall go?

Biking along the Bayley-Hazen Connector route. June 13, 2026 (rain date June 14)

Please join us for all or part of the 40 miles out and back bicycle ride from the Cross Vermont Trail in Newbury to the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail in Danville.

We'll start at the Cross Vermont Trail parking area in Boltonville on Route 302. Lunch break at the recently restored Danville Train Depot building, a beautiful historic building. Then we'll make the return trip south.

Road bikes, or gravel bikes recommended.

Old Mill Trail opens in Groton Gateway Park

Loop trail off of the Cross Vt Trail in Groton Village is now open. A simple hiking path that winds through the woods along the Wells River; and a chance to explore remnants of an historic dam and mill.

The dam itself was removed from the river a few years ago, and the land was given to the town by Green Mountain Power. This place is now a recovering riparian forest and in floods provides a place for water to spread out and dissipate. But on nice days a place for a pleasant hike!

National Trails Day in Wells River this Saturday! Meet at 9 AM at the Blue Mt Union School parking lot. We'll mow, trim brush and what not, get the many nature trails behind school and along the railbed ready for summer.

New Rock for Old Stones. Granite culvert on the rail trail in Plainfield, maybe 150 years old, still looks amazing. But even the best of us can get undercut by stormwater. On a beautiful Saturday morning we added new rocks to shore up where its hollowing out on the downhill side. (WGDR comes in loud and clear here, even with the antenna underground and surrounded by massive granite blocks.)

Birding Hike. Beautiful Sunday morning on the rail trail east of Rte 14 in East Montpelier. Ten folks came out and identified many birds and wildflowers. And purportedly there was a simultaneous Humaning Flight during which local birds identified ten people, or maybe smurfs, hard to tell apart sometimes.
