Hike today at the Millstone Quarries in Barre. The interest in this hike was overwhelming - we had 18 hikers and had to turn away several people as we didn't want the group to be too large. The foliage in Montpelier was not very colorful, but the aspens and birch at the quarries gave us a nice display. We parked by the old (now abandoned) Rock of Ages visitor center on Graniteville Road and did a loop around the Rock of Ages quarry, stopping for lunch on a peninsula which stuck out into the quarry. It was an international group, with two Cubans, two Dominicans, one Nicaraguan and one Polish person.

Green Mountain Club, Montpelier Section

The Montpelier Section of the Green Mountain Club (GMC) is one of fourteen sections. Our Section maintains two portions of the Long Trail, one just north of Camels Hump and the other around Sterling Pond. The GMC itself was founded in 1910 when it envisioned and began to create The Long Trail, the nation's first long distance hiking trail.

In addition to scheduled events in the quarterly Trail Talk, last-minute additions appear on the Current Events schedule. There is a weekly email announcement of upcoming events; see our main web page (gmcmontpelier.org) to join that mailing list. Trail Talk is also available on the web site.

The Young Adventurers Club (started in 2006 by Dave Blumenthal and Lexi Shear) offers outings for kids up to age 10 (with their parents.) It has spread to several other GMC sections and even beyond the GMC. They have their own page.
