Once again, highlighting the power of partnerships!

We recently had the opportunity to take a hard hat tour of the new supportive housing project at 322 St. Paul St. in Burlington, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s taking shape. The redevelopment will create 10 service-supported apartments designed to help adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities live as independently as possible while staying connected to a caring community.

This innovative project is the result of a strong partnership among Champlain Housing Trust, the Developmental Disability Housing Initiative, Howard Center, Champlain Community Services, and many others who share a vision for expanding housing opportunities in Vermont. Howard Center is proud to be part of a model that combines affordable housing, individualized supports, and community connection.

On Tuesday, June 2, NAMI Vermont hosted a Su***de Prevention Community Conversation at Howard Center's Mental Health Urgent Care facility in Burlington. Thank you to everyone who attended and shared a piece of their personal stories to promote healing and growth. 💙

Our panelists, Craig Bryan, Kathleen Kilbourne, and Mark Margolis, shared their lived experience, professional expertise, and insights on Su***de Prevention, including what they see as the strengths and the gaps in our current mental health system of care.

Mark emphasized the benefits of community-focused care, including Mental Health Urgent Care centers, and the need for strategic su***de prevention plans. Craig highlighted the barriers in our current system and the importance of asking what people really need and how to work together toward that point. Kathleen pointed out that while many times the system is effective at responding to a death by su***de, there are often lengthy wait times for individuals seeking clinical support.

In our everyday busy lives, we may feel as though we have no space to feel stressed or sad. Yet, being honest about how we feel is incredibly important for ourselves and our communities. This is one self-care value that NAMI Vermont embraces in our programs and workplace: to show up as you are and feel what you feel. Only then can we work on solving the root problem and lead happier, healthier lives.

Toward the end of the evening, our panelists addressed the question: "What is something we can all do to help?" Here are some great takeaways:

✅ Listen to a person in need and find a connection with them
✅ Express authentic gratitude
✅ Start meetings on a positive note with celebrations and kudos to our colleagues

Thank you to our community partner, Howard Center, for providing the space to facilitate this Community Conversation! Please join us for our next Community Conversation, Ask the Expert: Get Your Mental Health Questions Answered, on June 16 at South Burlington Public Library.
