The Central Vermont Career Center has collaborated with Vermont Works for Women for several years to provide the Rosie's Girls Welding Camp, giving middle schoolers across our region a unique opportunity to try something new. By inviting girls and gender-expansive youth to step into the world of welding, the program helps open doors to industries where representation is still growing, all within a supportive and empowering space.

CVCC was excited to provide our new Welding Program space for the camp this summer.

Thank you to many community members and flood recovery supporters of all backgrounds who joined Senator Peter Welch and his hardworking team to weigh in on FEMA reform and clear pathways forward for Vermonters responding to past and future environmental disasters. As always, your ideas and responses are so important in doing this work.

We couldn’t resist another visit to Sawyer Made, this time during one of George Sawyer’s hands-on chairmaking classes.

George is continuing the Sawyer family tradition of building Windsor chairs using time-tested tools, techniques, and materials. Each chair is made slowly and intentionally, from a blend of local woods chosen more for their character than consistency.

It is the kind of artisan experience that is harder to find these days and one that we are proud to have right here in Central Vermont.

Thank you so much to Katie at Montpelier Alive for inviting us over to Montpelier’s newest venue, Hepcat Hifi. Just around the corner from Cool Jewels, we filled this 15 person seat Japanese whiskey (and lots of cocktails, alcoholic and non) bar with future and new entrepreneurs to talk about the most open-ended part of the journey: the beginning. We heard from Wes about the first days of Three Penny, which did not involve as much math as he feared. One of our favorite long term business owners also revealed she was attending because she has a new idea. And reminiscing with Kelly from Splash about the three decades of her beautiful downtown shops was a moment to cherish. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

Farnham Farm Maple Sugaring in Plainfield is a fitting end to our Central Vermont maple tour, full of life, care, and connection. From the cows in the yard to the steam rising from a sap boil, everything spoke to a legacy of hard work and community. Their sugaring operation supports not just their family but others in the area too, reflecting the cooperative spirit that defines this region. We were honored to be joined by representatives from Senator Bernie Sanders’ office. Read more of this story and the rest of our Central Vermont maple journey on our website www.centralvermont.org

From tools to table, maple moves through many hands in Central Vermont. At Miles Supply, Inc. in Barre, a bustling CDL store and longtime family business, we saw firsthand where syrup-makers go for buckets, spouts, and everything needed to make maple flow. Meanwhile, at The Addison West in Waitsfield, maple finds its place on the shelves, elevated among artisan goods and local art. Both businesses show how deeply rooted maple is here, not just as a product, but as part of the culture and economy. Read more on our website www.centralvermont.org

Maple isn’t just a product in Montpelier, it’s a platform for learning, invention, and community connection. The sustainability program at Montpelier Main Street Middle School engages students in tapping trees while deepening their understanding of local ecosystems and food sources. Vermont Evaporator Co. builds tools for home sugaring and supports causes that honor maple’s heritage. And at Enna VT, a local eatery and gelato shop, Vermont maple is turned into unique, thoughtful flavors that reflect both place and values. Together, these programs show how maple continues to enrich life in Central Vermont. Full story on the website www.centralvermont.org

Vermont’s forests are powered in part by maple, supporting jobs, tourism, and nearly half the nation’s syrup. In Central Vermont, we explored the many forms maple takes, from sugarhouses to sweets, all rooted in a healthy, thriving forest.

Our first stop was Rugged Ridge Forest in Worcester, where Josh Seidman welcomed us into his wood-fired, horse-powered sugaring operation. From sustainable forestry to the science of syrup, every part of the land is thoughtfully used. Read the full story on our website to explore this incredible maple-powered operation.
