Check out this Letter to the Editor explaining that legislative action is needed to support H.132 and stop hunting of furbearers over bait piles. Vermont Fish & Wildlife knows that furbearers provide valuable ecosystem services but supports a culture of killing predator species.

Thank you Lamoille County Sheriff's Department for your work to enforce laws against animal cruelty. Your work responding to these crimes is appreciated!

On 03/05/2025 the Lamoille County Sheriff’s Department was notified of an alleged animal abuse complaint on Thompson Hill RD in Hyde Park. Upon verifying evidence substantiating neglect and animal abuse, Deputies opened a criminal investigation. Investigators quickly determined the animals belonged to Johnathan Moger, age 23, of Hyde Park, VT.

Investigators located a substantial number of deceased and many uncared for animals to include five goats, one pig and fourteen rabbits on the property. Deputies and Animal Control took appropriate action and documented all relevant findings. Digital evidence was secured and numerous interviews were conducted with witnesses and animal care professionals.

After meeting with Deputies, Johnathan Moger was charged with twenty counts of Animal Cruelty and will appear in Lamoille County Court on 04/02/2025 to answer to the charges.

Anyone having information about these crimes is encouraged to contact the Lamoille County Sheriff’s Department at 802-888-3502.
