One year after the flood, we want to take a moment to thank all of our flood heroes… the volunteers and helpers who made this disaster easier to bear. Your support bringing supplies to homes, cleaning debris, feeding the public, and tending to people’s needs was invaluable. Our resilience as a city relies so much on those who say “I can help,” and today, we want to honor what you did one year ago. Thank you for your service!

The National Weather Service is currently not predicting the rivers in Montpelier to reach the Action Stage. The City is monitoring river gauges closely and is in constant contact with State emergency management organizations.

Out of an abundance of caution, the City will have sandbags available for residents and businesses should they feel the need to proactively protect against flash flooding. Beginning at Noon, sandbags will be available in front of City Hall for properties in the immediate downtown area. Residents and businesses outside the immediate downtown are welcome to fill and collect sandbags at the DPW Garage at 783 Dog River Road. This is available immediately.

Please call DPW at 802-223-9508 with questions about sandbags.

The National Weather Service this morning reports no major changes from yesterday’s weather predictions for today’s incoming storm. A Flood Watch is in effect for northern New York and most of Vermont from 11 AM Wednesday to 12 PM Thursday. Widespread heavy rain and the potential for a few strong to severe storms are expected today and tonight associated with the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Beryl. Scattered areas of flash flooding are possible.

The Winooski River at Montpelier is still expected to stay well below the Action Stage, but may be noticeably fuller as the bulk of the rain ends. We will follow up with an update after the next National Weather Service at 5 PM this evening.

Please make sure you are registered for VT-Alert so that you’ll never miss important emergency alerts and severe weather updates. Sign up for Vermont Alert here: https://vem.vermont.gov/vtalert
