THANK YOU FOR NOT RAKING OR BLOWING LEAVES INTO THE LAKES!๐Ÿ

Environmental impacts of raking or blowing leaves into the lakes:
~Increased nutrient levels: Leaves contain nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus that, when decomposed in water, act as a fertilizer, leading to an excess of nutrients in the lakes.
~Algae blooms: The extra nutrients can fuel the rapid growth of algae, which can clog the water and create an unpleasant, unhealthy environment.
~Decreased dissolved oxygen: When algae blooms die and decompose, the process uses up a lot of dissolved oxygen in the water, which can suffocate fish and other aquatic organisms.
~Increased w**d growth: The increased nutrients can also cause excessive growth of aquatic w**ds.
~Bottom sediment buildup: Leaves can accumulate on the lake bottom, creating a layer of muck that buries the natural lakebed and can be harmful to organisms living there.

Blue-Green Algae Update from our Indiana DNR Area Biologist -
On Thursday, July 10th three samples were collected at the upper (Kleckner Park in Monterey, IN), middle (Public Access Boat Ramp in Pulaksi, IN) and lower (Buffalo, IN) reaches of the bloom. These samples were tested for four cyanotoxins which are commonly associated with these blooms on Friday, July 11th. The samples came back with detections of Microcystin and Anatoxin-a at all three locations. Both toxins were below the Human Health Advisories listed in the table pictured below. However, Anatoxin-a was above the Dog Health Advisories being 0.90 parts per billion at the Buffalo, IN location. Based on this information it is recommended to keep animals out of the water. Animals are more sensitive to cyanotoxins due to their smaller body sizes and there are additional exposure routes for animals from ingestion, to eating algal mats or licking cyanobacteria or toxins off their fur. Veterinarians recommend not allowing pets and livestock to drink or swim in waters affected by algae. If in doubt, keep your animals out. If you think your animal is ill from contact, this is an emergency so call your veterinarian immediately.

Based on the results, there is no indication that a human recreation advisory should be issued at this time, however it is recommended to keep young children out of the water, away from the bloom area, and to rinse off with warm, soapy water after swimming.

Other things to note, these samples represent the conditions of that site at the time of the collection. In a flowing river, the bloom is moving downstream and conditions can change daily. Additionally, Blue-green algae cells release toxins as they die, if the bloom is still growing then more toxins could be released in the future. The best course of action is to avoid exposure to water where the bloom is occurring.

The White County Indiana Health Department is in communication with those at the State level in working together to keep you informed.
From the White County Notification System:
Recently there have been concerns regarding the possible presence of blue green algae in areas of Lake Shafer. Reports of a blue green coloration and film on the lake have been received locally as well as at the state level. At this time, it is advisable to use precautions around areas of discoloration. Avoid boating or swimming in affected areas. Children and pets should especially avoid coming into contact with the water as they are more vulnerable to ingesting the water. Anyone coming into contact with the lake water should be sure to thoroughly shower with clean water and soap immediately following contact. Water should not be swallowed.
