First field trip was middle school students traveling to Frankfort to tour the Kentucky Historical Society Museum and the Old State Capitol building. Students were encouraged to not only view the history of Kentucky but to look for ways technology had also changed throughout the years.

Day #3 for middle schoolers was a continuation of problem solving skills and challenging their inner engineering skills. Students made cart and cart pushers. Students raced their carts and worked on ways to improve their race. Students made mazes to practice moving Sphero Bots.

Day #3 and elementary students were extremely productive today. In keeping with our book, our students decorated jeweled boxes, colored helmets and created sand art necklaces. They also completed a community service project of making dog chew toys from old blue jeans that they are donating to the local animal shelter. PT had another new game that emphasized team work by collecting the most balls as a team.

Day #2 for middle schoolers was all about challenges. Students worked on solving Shashibo Cube puzzles to get their thinking skills a work out. Students started working with some simple machines by building and testing levers. Students launched various stuffed animals to try different board lengths and various positions of the fulcrum. Middle schoolers also got in on a little Mosquito Tag during PT.

Day #2 of summer camp ended with more smiles and fun. In the story this week for elementary, the characters are surrounded by some horrible smells so the students participated in a blind test to see how many smells they could identify. (Example mustard, coffee, vinegar, bbq sauce) Our story also has a character that has memory issues so we tested their memories with some old fashioned memory games. They were introduced to a new game in PT called Mosquito Tag.

I believe fun was had by all on our first day with elementary students. Students loved playing games of “caterpillar” in PT time and racing our teen helpers. Students created their own name tent with information about themselves. Students were introduced to our “Heroes in Training” book series and our first book of the summer. They also enjoyed meeting and learning about an addition (pet) to summer camp…Edison.

Summer Camp got off to a great first day. Our middle school students were truly working on “Building Their Future” by working together and building marble roller coasters. Students had to design, build and test two different roller coasters. One used paper plates and various cups while the other used boxes, furniture and foam pipe insulation.

Our students enjoyed a drawing activity led by one of our partners the Wayne County Public Library. Students used the rolling of dice to determine the shape and look of their snowman. Thank you to Ms. Jasmine and Ms. Heather for spending the evening with us.
