On September 29, 1918, Private Roy W. Hamm was killed in action in Lorraine, France during World War I. On Sunday, August 14, 1919 it was reported that over 3,000 people attended his funeral service which was held at the Monticello Fair Grounds. His body was placed on a flower covered gun carriage led by six horses and carried to his final resting place at our Monticello Township Cemetery. His original grave marker being over 100 years old was illegible and beyond the restoration efforts of Chris Cravens, cemetery sexton. With Chris’s assistance we put in a request for a new headstone last fall. Today, Chris along with the assistance of Zach & Randy from Adams Memorial, a new headstone was installed. Hamm-Burke American Legion Post 101 is proud to remember and honor the memory of Private Roy W. Hamm. Our country will forever remember the ultimate sacrifice of Private Hamm and so many other fallen service members.
