As Memorial Day weekend brought people together in remembrance and service, firefighters across Sullivan County also continued building healthy habits through movement and connection.

🇺🇸 Kauneonga Lake firefighters joined local VFW Post 5499 in placing American flags at gravesites ahead of Memorial Day. The group walked through the cemetery together, honoring those who served and reflecting on the importance of remembrance and community service.

🚒 Livingston Manor firefighters honored those who served by walking in their Memorial Day parade. They enjoyed a healthy dinner together after the parade

🌮Jeffersonville firefighters got in the kitchen to make homemade veggie-filled tacos after drill night

💪 Monticello firefighters stick to their healthy routine each week with a stretch, workout, and healthy snack

👟The Walking Challenge is ending strong, with 4 departments already reaching the “Local Steps” tier by walking 1–10 miles this month! Shoutout to Smallwood-Mongaup Valley FD (6 miles), White Lake FD (4 miles), Kauneonga Lake FD (2 miles), and Swan Lake FD (2 miles) for getting outside!

Way to go, departments! Keep following along to see WHO will be the winners of the 2026 Healthiest Fire Department Challenge!

🥬 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟮𝟲,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀?

A big thank you to Somewhere in Time Farm for donating more than one million seeds to support Sullivan 180’s Catskill Edible Garden Project this season. From school gardens to community outreach, these tiny seeds are helping grow healthier habits and hands-on learning across Sullivan County. At SUNY Sullivan’s Earth Day celebration and Callicoon’s inaugural Ramp Festival, dozens of youth and adults stopped by the Sullivan 180 table to take home seeds to grow their own salads.

🌷 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵, 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀.

Gardening creates connection, encourages movement, and offers simple moments to slow down, reset, and recharge. Whether in a community garden or your own backyard, time outdoors can make a meaningful difference.

🚒 Challenge Captain Meeting 3 at Kauneonga Lake Fire Department!

This week, we had our third Challenge Captain meeting of the year at the Kauneonga Lake Firehouse. Why have a Challenge Captain meeting at a firehouse? Who better to share about their successes than the departments themselves! Kauneonga Lake took the lead, talking about how they have been successful the past 4 years of the Challenge and bringing in their yoga instructor, Laura Liddle, to lead a yoga class; from pulling hoses to perfecting poses, these firefighters can do it all! 🧘

A huge thank you to the Kauneonga Lake Fire Department and Katrina Blais, Moshe Angyalfi, Tim Blais, Sue Collins, and Howie Goldsmith for hosting this Challenge Captain meeting, and to Laura Liddle for a delightful yoga class!

🔥The temperatures are rising, and so is the competition! Departments are stepping up, staying active, and bringing the energy all across the county.

🎣 Swan Lake firefighters enjoyed the sun and had a department fishing day. They fished, enjoyed healthy snacks and a barbecue, and took an over two-mile walk around their town

🍿Livingston Manor firefighters enjoyed healthy snacks after a walk to restock the Livingston Manor Little Free Pantry

🥾Smallwood-Mongaup Valley firefighters participated in an over two-mile Walk and Talk with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) through the Forest Reserve at Smallwood. The group walked through trails they had never been on before and learned how to keep the area clean and natural; healthy and educational!

🦺 White Lake firefighters took a walk after drill, safety first!

🚨 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗜𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆!

From wellness walks and healthy meals to community service and fitness activities, our departments kicked off May with incredible energy and teamwork!

🚶‍♂️Smallwood-Mongaup Valley firefighters took a 2-mile walk through the Smallwood Forest Reserve, trying out a new route; they also updated their health board for May.

🌮Both White Lake and Smallwood-Mongaup Valley firefighters made a delicious and healthy taco/quesadilla spread for their monthly meetings on Cinco de Mayo

🥕Narrowsburg-Lava firefighters enjoyed fresh peppers and carrots with garlic-seasoned Greek yogurt dip
🥫Livingston Manor firefighters walked to restock the Livingston Manor Little Free Pantry

💪Monticello firefighters followed along to a workout video, they also stretched, had a healthy snack, and did a litter pluck in their community

🩺Swan Lake firefighters did blood pressure checks for their members; regular blood pressure checks help detect health issues early and support overall heart health

👟The Walking Challenge has begun with Kauneonga Lake Fire Department (2 miles), Smallwood-Mongaup Valley (4 miles) and White Lake (4 miles) fire departments logging miles early in the Challenge!

Strong youth mental health systems are built through prevention, connection, and community.

This month’s Sullivan County Democrat editorial highlights the meaningful work happening across Sullivan County to support youth mental health from Youth Mental Health First Aid training and SHAPE implementation to Hope Squad student leadership, advocacy, and peer connection.
