Reach Out and Read-Alabama Strengthening all families with young children through guidance from medical clinicians about nurturing relationships through shared reading

Reach Out and Read believes that all families should have access to books and the meaningful moments that are created by shared reading with children. By integrating reading into pediatric practices, advising families about the importance of reading aloud, and giving books at well-child visits, we foster enduring family bonds between caregivers and their children that promote healthy childhood dev

elopment. At the simplest level, we provide the training, resources, and support that providers need to make books, reading, and meaningful moments accessible to every child they serve. Through our work, we break down barriers for under-resourced communities and lift up storytellers of all backgrounds, focusing on the strengths of parents and caregivers. We undertake and promote leading research into healthy child development. And we inspire compassionate donors to support a national network that is changing the face of pediatric care—one story at a time. Our Reach Out and Read program in Alabama is a partnership between the National Center and the Alabama Chapter-American Academy of Pediatrics.

We are thrilled to be part of this incredible nonprofit program! Through this initiative, we are able to give each child a new book at every well-child visit, helping foster a love of reading from an early age. We also have the opportunity to engage with parents about the importance of reading together, strengthening the parent-child bond while promoting early literacy and healthy development.
We are proud to support our young patients and families through the gift of books and the power of literacy. 📚❤️

Taking a look back when Simon Williamson Clinic Pediatrics joined the program...

Simon Williamson Clinic Pediatrics, PC became part of the program two decades ago, with the Angell Foundation significantly contributing to the funding of books for their practice.

Lynn Angell and David Angell were passengers on American Airlines Flight 11, which tragically struck the north tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Dr. Tom Edwards, a pediatrician at Simon Williamson Clinic Pediatrics at that time, was Lynn's brother. In honor of Lynn and David, the Angell Foundation was established, reflecting the compassion and dedication to helping others that they exhibited during their lives. The Foundation has generously supported the clinic's program with annual donations since then.
