We sat down with Peter DeWitt and Michael Nelson to discuss their most recent book Lead Collectively. It was a fantastic conversation that covered the work they are doing in Alabama, an overview of the practical tools within the book, the importance of having a shared understanding within a school, and much, much more. Be sure to listen and pick up a copy of Lead Collectively! The ABPC is grateful for our ongoing partnership with Shelby County AL Schools and the opportunity to support their commitment to excellence in teaching and learning.

It’s been inspiring to watch their instructional coaches expand their impact year after year, empowering teachers and helping students thrive. Their thoughtfully developed and continually refined Instructional Playbook has become an invaluable resource for educators across the district.

This week, we are thrilled to feature Emma Sansom Middle School as our next Champions of
Progress! These absolute rockstar educators were committed to using their learning in PLN to help strengthen their school culture and increase student engagement. Their plan began by establishing a Student Leadership Council to discuss and promote expected behaviors
throughout the school. Working independently of teachers, students collaborated to identify, define, and promote appropriate behaviors for the classroom, hallways, lunchroom, gym, and dismissal areas.
This initiative has already helped to decrease office referrals and increase attendance. We want to thank Marcia, Alicia, Krista, and Monique for leading this initiative to improve the lives of the students in their community! Our next Champions of Progress is Berry Middle School This group was dedicated, consistent, and passionate the entire year.

Their implementation plan focused on harnessing the power of an AI GEM to develop an
easy-to-use, versatile digital planning tool that directly connects the phases of learning to
ALCOS standards, giving teachers a practical, classroom-ready way to apply these strategies.
BMS launched this work with a focus on math instruction, laying the groundwork for future
expansion across content areas.

We have so much gratitude for Matt, Shonteria, Rebecca, Allison, Alisha, and Julie for all the
work they do to improve the lives of students in their community! Hoover City Schools

We are back with our next Champions of Progress team! Today we are highlighting Pelham Park Middle School (PPMS)! We loved having them attend the 2025-2026 Powerful Learning Network (PLN), and the energy they brought elevated the learning for everyone.

PPMS launched the school year with a professional learning experience focused on eight high-impact instructional strategies endorsed by both John Hattie and Robert Marzano. Their implementation plan showcases their school’s journey, the critical role of teacher ownership within the PLC process, the walkthrough tools used during instructional rounds, and a link to our evolving instructional playbook working document. You can find their full implementation plan here:https://aplusala.org/best-practices-center/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2026/05/PPMS-IP-25-26.pdf

We want to thank Ryan, Alicia, Michael, Melissa, Lacey, and Katelin for being a part of PLN and for their tireless dedication to the students in their community! Pelham Park Middle School Pelham City Schools

Our next Champions of Progress team is Bumpus Middle School! We were so excited to welcome Hoover City Schools back into the Powerful Learning Network in 2025-2026. They brought incredible energy and engagement to the learning all year.

Bumpus Middle focused its learning on transitioning to Highly Effective PLCs by integrating McREL’s 6 Phases of Learning with data-driven decision-making. Their plan directly impacts student outcomes through the following methods: enhanced motivation and engagement, improved cognitive processing, and targeted academic support. See their full implementation plan here.
