A great day of hands-on learning with fourth-year architecture students in Auburn University’s new Concrete Masonry Design Studio! The afternoon included an overview from ACIA staff, followed by Rachel Stivers and Eric Consuegra of Goodwyn Mills Cawood sharing important design considerations for using concrete masonry units.

Students then put those concepts into practice during a block-laying demonstration led by C&C Masonry. A special thank-you to Oldcastle GMS for donating the CMUs and mortar used during the demonstration! The studio is a joint effort made possible through the financial support of the ACIA and the Concrete Masonry Checkoff.

It was a great day of hands-on learning for 17 seniors from Jonathan Tucker’s Building Science class at Auburn University.

The students toured Martin Marietta’s Auburn Quarry and Castone’s precast facility, gaining valuable firsthand exposure to the materials, processes, and operations that help bring construction projects to life.

A special thank you to Martin Marietta and Castone Corporation for opening their facilities, sharing their expertise, and investing in the next generation of construction professionals.

ACIA thanks the Birmingham Chapter of AIA for the opportunity to present a panel on the design and construction of Auburn University’s nearly $230 million new STEM building during Higher Education Day.

The concrete frame project was discussed by moderator Frank Mruk of NRMCA and panelists Mark Coyle of Goodwyn Mills Cawood, Greg Tucker of Tucker Jones Engineers, and Daniel Casey of Hoar Construction.
