From Arise's senior organizer for Southeast Alabama, Formeeca Tripp:

Yellowhammer Fund and Alabama Arise were together listening to the people, sharing joy and resources in Eufaula, Camp Hill and Alexander City last week. Yellowhammer Fund is on their statewide bus tour and it was beyond a privilege to serve alongside them.

“We actually underfund our public schools in comparison to many of our neighboring states, and this is just going to put more pressure on our ability to pay for our public school system," Arise's Carol Gundlach tells Alabama Public Radio.

Educators and families in Alabama are among those watching a change that’s coming on New Year’s Day. The legislature passed a measure in 2024 called the Creating Hope and Opportunity for Our Students’ Education Act. The program is known as the CHOOSE Act for short.

Several Arise staff and partners attended the Labor Notes conference in Chicago last week. Arise's communications associate Whitney Washington recounts her experience:

"I had an incredible time at the Labor Notes conference last weekend. I met some amazing organizers from all over the world, but I was most excited to talk to my fellow southerners.

I attended the CWA meetup which was packed with hundreds of our union siblings who got to celebrate their wins. I did not realize how wide CWA’s organizing goes: healthcare, higher education, news , tech, telecoms, and of course nonprofits.

It was so cool to meet all the different unions and learn about how they organize, and remember we're all in this fight together. I facilitated a panel on social media videos and got to learn from the incredible panelists who have earned millions of followers talking about labor.

I can't wait to go back in 2028 and hope as many Arise people as possible can join. People were always excited to hear that I was from Alabama and to know we're supporting worker power down here."

Arise's senior health policy advocate, Jennifer Harris, spent some time in D.C. earlier this month for Oral Health Lobby Day on the Hill with our partners at CareQuest Institute for Oral Health. We were happy for the opportunity to advocate for better healthcare access for all Alabamians!

A few Arise staff members gathered in Huntsville last week to mail letters to Alabama's labor leaders. Arise’s Worker Power Campaign director, Adam Keller, shared this reflection:

“173 letters went out to various working class organizations including local labor unions ( a lot of very rural ones at that!), regional and statewide labor orgs and other Alabama organizers and national allies.

“They’ll receive an intro letter from me with a campaign one-pager on the back, an endorsement letter from the North Alabama Area Labor Council and a QR code flyer with links to gift membership, donation, the campaign landing page and the new worker power issue survey we launched this week.

“Thanks so much for everyone who helped! Hopefully good things come out of it!”

"No parent should have to worry about how they can afford to keep their family fed. Fortunately, SUN Bucks is here to help many Alabama families keep food on the table," Arise's LaTrell Clifford Wood writes.

SUN Bucks ensures hundreds of thousands of Alabama children have continued access to some of the nutrition they need over the summer.
