The Chief Tuskaloosa Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, is celebrating America’s 250th birthday by hanging 20 commemorative banners along Greensboro Avenue in downtown Tuscaloosa. The banners honor Revolutionary War Patriots buried in and around Tuscaloosa County.

Funded in part by a $1,000 grant from America250AL, Alabama’s semi quincentennial commission, whose mission, along with the NSDAR, is to promote programs and events that educate, engage, and invite Alabamians around the nations founding principals.

Chapter members designed the banners and worked closely with Mayor Walt Maddox and city officials to bring the project to life. Originally planned for six banners, the project expanded to 20 thanks to the city’s contribution of hardware and manpower. Chapter Regent Alice Jones was especially thrilled to see a banner honoring her 5th great-grandfather, Turner Hamner.

Twelve banners have been installed at the intersections on Greensboro Ave. The remaining eight will be installed later this summer after construction on Greensboro is complete.

Join the Chief Colbert Chapter, NSDAR for a special America 250 program honoring the life and legacy of Patrick Henry.

“Give me liberty or give me death” remains one of the most powerful calls for American independence, and this program will bring that history to life through remarks by Chapter Regent Mindy Bates and a speech by American Village Historical Interpreter Gabe Evans as Patrick Henry.
