Children's Hope was launched at First Baptist Church in Montgomery, AL in late 2010. The Lord placed a need for a church orphan ministry on the hearts of Andy and Tanya Birchfield through their personal adoption journey. It became very clear to them that the needs of orphans and vulnerable children were great and that Scripture clearly mandates Christians reach out and care for these children. Aft

er forming a prayer group and engaging other key partners, the Birchfields founded Children's Hope and began engagement in foster care support, adoption advocacy, and orphan care. Following a devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010, an initial trip to there led Children's Hope to connect with 16 children living in a tent under the care of a young Haitian man. The ministry arranged for housing and the care of these children- the first steps of engagement in Haiti. Today, we care for more than 50 children on our campus in Jacmel, serve more than 5000 community members through our medical/dental clinic, provide education to over 650 students through our schools, and engage thousands in the surrounding communities through our community ministry and mission team programs. We work in partnership with the local government, churches, and community leaders with a vision to see children, families, and communities transformed by the power of the Gospel and the strategic meeting of needs.

Every day in Jacmel, Haiti, Children's Hope is putting food on the table for some of the most vulnerable people in our community. Here are the food programs making that happen:

The Children's Home
We care for 64 vulnerable children who depend on us for everything, including every meal. These kids come from some of the hardest circumstances imaginable. For them, a plate of food is also a message: you are loved, you are safe, and you belong.

Schools
Across our three schools in Jacmel, Bossier, and Cap Rouge, we serve about 600 students every day. This year, we will serve over 172,000 meals to our students. For many of these children, the lunch they receive at school is the only complete meal they will eat that day. We believe you cannot educate a hungry child.

Seniors
The elderly are among the most vulnerable and food insecure people in Haiti. Every two weeks, we distribute food to 160 seniors in our community, primarily widows, providing them with rice and beans that for many is a lifeline. This year, we will provide an estimated 54,000 meals to seniors alone.

Prison Ministry
The conditions inside the Jacmel prison are devastating. There is no food provided by the prison itself. If you need to eat, the food must be brought in from someone on the outside. People are literally starving in the jails. Once a month, Children's Hope brings food to feed the prisoners. It is one of the most urgent and overlooked needs in our community.

Caring for children, strengthening families, and serving a community in desperate need. That is the mission of Children's Hope, and these food programs are where that mission becomes a meal on someone's plate. For the people we serve, that has deep impact.

The numbers are staggering, and they're getting worse.

According to the latest data from the UN's Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), more than 5 million people in Haiti, nearly half the population, are currently experiencing acute food insecurity. Of those, nearly 2 million are facing what experts classify as "Emergency" levels of hunger. A portion are in outright famine conditions.

For children, the picture is even more alarming. UNICEF reported in April 2025 that 2.85 million Haitian children, 1 in 4, are food insecure, with over a million of them facing critical hunger levels. And of the 129,000 children projected to need emergency malnutrition treatment this year, fewer than 4% have been reached so far.

Why is Haiti facing such a severe crisis?

The causes run deep:
- Gang violence has overtaken major roads and markets, cutting off food supplies
- Haiti's economy has been in recession for six consecutive years
- Over 1.3 million people are internally displaced, many living in makeshift shelters with almost no access to food
- Climate shocks, including recent hurricanes, have devastated agricultural communities

This is the backdrop against which Children's Hope operates. It's not easy work. But it is essential work.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing stories from the food programs Children's Hope operates in Haiti, reaching children in our care, students in schools, elderly neighbors, prisoners, and more.

We believe Haiti's crisis demands more than awareness. It demands action.

Stay with us as we share what's happening on the ground, and how you can be part of the solution.

🇭🇹 Happy Flag Day, Haiti!

This week, our children and staff celebrated Flag Day in Haiti in a big way!

We threw a community party full of laughter, friendly competition, and full plates. The kids had races, played soccer, cards, and celebrated their flag and their country together. Then they all sat down for a big shared meal. Maybe the most exciting part is that we invited kids from Morne Ogé to come in and join us in the celebration.

This is what serving our community looks like this week. Thank you to everyone who makes moments like these possible!

Our Mental Health Program has been an incredible blessing to the community of Jacmel, but it's also become something very special for the children we care for each day.

When a child is carrying something heavy, fear, grief, confusion, or the weight of a difficult past, they don't have to carry it alone. Each child in our care has the opportunity to spend time with a psychologist, working through the hard things in a safe and supportive space.

This kind of access to mental health care is almost unheard of in Haiti. For most children, that kind of support simply isn't available. But for our kids, it's part of how we love and care for them, because meeting a child's needs means more than a meal and a safe place to sleep. It means caring for their heart and mind too.

We are so grateful for every tool we have to walk alongside these children.

We want you to meet Francky Germain.

Francky grew up in Jacmel, Haiti, with a heart for people and a deep desire to understand how communities survive and heal during times of crisis. He wanted to learn how to walk alongside victims, protect the vulnerable, and offer real support to those affected by trauma and displacement.

In December 2024, Francky was accepted into the Psychosocial Intervention Certificate Training Program through our Mental Health program. A year later, he graduated with his certificate and a clear sense of purpose.

Today, Francky works at a public school and with a local NGO, focused on families displaced from Port-au-Prince who have resettled in Haiti's southeast. He helps families process stress and trauma, provides emotional support to children, and connects people with the mental health resources they need. He has become a trusted presence for many families who had nowhere else to turn.

Francky's story is exactly why our Mental Health program exists — and he's just getting started. Next year, he plans to pursue his bachelor's degree in psychology.

Did you know Children's Hope runs a full mental health program in Jacmel, Haiti?

Mental health isn't widely talked about in Haiti — but the need is very real. Our Haitian staff saw a dramatic rise in depression and even su***de in their community, and they refused to look away. So they got to work.

What started as sharing a meal with street children and simply listening to their stories has grown into a walk-in mental health center open every day, weekly group therapy sessions, weekend training for young people, and outreach that reaches prisoners, students, the elderly, and homeless children right where they are.

In 2025 alone, 111 people graduated from the program — and 17 of them now work alongside our staff to bring healing to others.

One participant put it this way: "I found people who listened, who understood, and who reminded me that I am not alone. Slowly, I am finding peace again."

Hope is growing in Haiti — one mind, one heart at a time.

Whenever the parachute comes out, the younger kids run over with huge smiles, ready to grab the edges and start playing. The bright colors stretch out like a giant rainbow, and suddenly the whole yard is filled with laughter, bouncing waves, and excited little voices.
It’s such a simple activity, but it brings so much joy. Watching the kids giggle as the parachute rises and falls is always one of the highlights of the day.
Sometimes the brightest moments really do come from the simplest things.

Oh the excitement of learning to ride a bike! We never forget the thrill of pedaling on our own the first time on two wheels!

We were able to get 10 bikes for the children at the children’s home. Blue bikes, pink bikes, white, yellow, red. Bikes of all colors and different sizes so each child can learn to ride a bike appropriate for their size.

It’s been so great seeing the joy on their faces as they feel that moment for the first time. It’s also been amazing to see the kids share and encourage each other. Perhaps the most beautiful thing about these new bikes has been seeing the older children really come along side the younger kids, helping them and teaching them how to ride. It has been a beautiful example of what the community and culture of the children looks like at the children’s home.
