Our Story - Born out of community crisis and saving lives every day!
Medical Advocacy & Outreach (MAO) was founded by a group of concerned and inspiring Montgomery, Alabama residents in April of 1987. By late summer that year, the original all volunteer staff was actively providing much needed HIV/AIDS education to the community and respite/hospice care to those who were diagnosed with AIDS. As needs and knowledge grew, MAO grew as well becoming the largest organization of its kind in South Alabama, providing direct care to more than 2,000 as well as free testing and education to an estimated 4,500 annually. MAO provides medical, dental, and behavioral healthcare, as well as pharmacy and social services, prevention education in the community, and professional development for providers and advocates. Services continue to expand to address the needs and issues inherent in South Alabama’s rural areas, including addiction and substance abuse. With 3 full-service sites in Montgomery, Dothan, and Atmore, and 11 Alabama e-Health satellite clinics boasting state-of-the-art telemedicine technology, MAO remains committed to improving the lives of those infected and affected by potentially life-threatening illnesses, including HIV and Hep C, and removing barriers to specialty rural care in South Alabama. Get tested for HIV and Hep C! Play safe! Did you test negative for HIV? Consider PrEP treatment as prevention. PrEP is available through the MAO Wellness Center and through all MAO hub sites.
