The Landmarks Foundation of Montgomery is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization established in 1967 to foster, encourage and lead the historic preservation movement in Montgomery, Alabama. Acting as an administrative agency for the City of Montgomery, Landmarks oversees Old Alabama Town and works as an independent entity on community restoration and preservation projects. With the purchase of the Orde

man House in 1967, Landmarks and the City of Montgomery began a unique partnership that has resulted in the restoration and interpretation of 50 authentically restored 19th and early 20th century structures stretching six blocks through historic downtown Montgomery. Many of these structures are clustered together into the authentic history village, Old Alabama Town, which is open for public tours. The remaining structures are rented out as commercial real estate.

Then & Now Tuesday... Manegold Building, 19 Madison Avenue
George Manegold’s father founded a candy manufacturing business on Commerce Street in 1870. After the building burned in 1912, Manegold reopened on Madison Avenue selling both candy and to***co. The area had once been a well-respected residential neighborhood but the commercial district was expanding as Montgomery grew. The Manegold Building now serves as the Montgomery Fire Department Headquarters. (ADAH)
