Dear MPS Families and Staff,

Following a thorough evaluation of campus staffing coverage, all Montgomery Public Schools and administrative offices will be CLOSED tomorrow, Friday, October 9.

This operational decision was made to prioritize students' safety and supervision throughout the district. We are facing a high volume of employee leave requests, anticipated regional effects from Hurricane Isaias, a declared State of Emergency in Montgomery County, and the rescheduling of Alabama State University's annual Homecoming. These factors prevent us from maintaining adequate operational coverage across the district.

All campus buildings and administrative facilities will remain closed, and there will be no in-person or remote instruction tomorrow. All MPS campuses will reopen for normal operations on Tuesday, October 13, following the scheduled federal holiday.

Guidance regarding Friday evening athletics will be communicated directly by the school leadership.

We deeply appreciate your patience, flexibility, and understanding as we work to ensure a safe environment for our scholars and staff.

The School Liaison and the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) want to establish a robust, supportive partnership with our local homeschooling community. We want to build a strong network where we can refer incoming Maxwell-Gunter families to active, experienced homeschooling community members who can offer guidance and support.

To launch this effort, we cordially invite you to a "Meet Up" to connect, share helpful resources, and hear directly from you.

🌪️ MAXWELL AFB HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS: Prepare Early. Stay Informed. Protect the Mission.

Hurricane and tropical storm season can bring destructive winds, heavy rain, flooding, power outages and hazardous travel conditions. Taking action before a storm approaches helps protect Airmen, families, property and mission readiness.

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
🟡 HURRICANE WATCH: Conditions are possible, generally within 48 hours. Review your plans and begin preparations.
🔴 HURRICANE WARNING: Conditions are expected, generally within 36 hours. Complete preparations and follow official direction.

BEFORE THE STORM
✔️ Monitor 42d ABW, installation, local emergency management and National Weather Service updates.
✔️ Review your household emergency plan and evacuation route.
✔️ Prepare water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies, cash and important documents.
✔️ Charge phones and backup batteries and fuel vehicles early.
✔️ Secure outdoor furniture, grills, trash containers and other loose objects.
✔️ Know your unit's accountability and reporting procedures.

DURING THE STORM
🏠 Stay indoors and away from windows and exterior doors.
🚗 Avoid unnecessary travel.
🌊 Never drive through flooded roadways—turn around, don't drown.
⚠️ Stay clear of downed power lines, damaged structures, trees and standing water.

AFTER THE STORM
Wait for official notification before returning to affected workspaces or facilities. Report hazards, damage, injuries and accountability concerns through established channels, and use caution around damaged buildings, floodwater and electrical equipment.

With Fall Breaks coming up, please remember that Attendance Matters. Know when your kids have school breaks and if they are absent on normal school days make sure you send a note to the school explaning the absence. Students can only have a certain number of excused/unexcused absences. You do not want to get a TRUANCY letter. Find this information in your district's Student Handbook or Code of Conduct.
