Alabama Communities of Excellence

Alabama Communities of Excellence ACE provides participants with a “one-stop shopping” experience by offering community development programs and the tools needed to ensure long-term success.

The Alabama Communities of Excellence (ACE) program uses a comprehensive, three-phase approach to help participating communities plan and prepare for a more vibrant future. Throughout each phase, ACE's partners from the private sector, government agencies, and universities work with each community to successfully achieve its goals. ACE was created in 2002 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation. As of

September 2022, ACE has become a program under the Alabama League of Municipalities. It will maintain a non-profit designation and will continue to utilize the collective expertise of its partner organizations to assist communities with a qualifying population of 2,000 to 18,000. It provides participants with a “one-stop shopping” experience by offering community development programs and the tools needed to ensure long-term success within their organization. To participate in the ACE program, communities must submit a completed application when the process is open. The main criteria used when selecting ACE participants are:
1) Level of local commitment to the ACE program.
2) Community’s capacity to support the ACE program.
3) Provision of complete and accurate information in the application.

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out our advocacy edition of The Alabama Municipal Journal!

We appreciate our state’s top leaders – Governor Kay Ivey, Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth, Pro Tem Garlan Gudger Jr. and Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter – for sharing their legislative priorities as well as Alabama’s newest congressman, Rep. Shomari Figures for contributing a piece for our members to get to know him better.

We also spotlighted our fall graduates; Helena for being the first Healthy Alabama Community in the state; Arab for their Alabama Communities of Excellence involvement; and Semmes for their participation in our Economic Development Academy.
