Let's Talk About Something Awesome! 🗣️

Today’s Lesson: Chinese Slang

Slang: 好猛 (hǎo měng)

Definition: A casual way to say "so awesome," "so impressive," or "so fierce." 😍

Context: This phrase is used when someone or something is incredibly powerful, skilled, or cool. It's often used with an exclamation to express admiration.

Example: My friend finished a marathon in under three hours. That's 好猛! (That's so awesome!) 🏃

Unlike most writing systems, the Korean alphabet, 한글, has a documented creator, purpose, and history!

In 1443, King Sejong the Great created 한글 to help ordinary people learn to read and write more easily. It was officially introduced in 1446 through a document called 훈민정음.

At the time, written communication relied heavily on Chinese characters, which were difficult for many people to learn. King Sejong wanted to make reading and writing more accessible.

What makes 한글 remarkable is that we know who created it, why it was created, and the principles behind its design.

📅 Every October 9, South Korea celebrates 한글날 (Hangeul Day) to honor the creation of its alphabet.

More than just a writing system, 한글 represents the importance of education, communication, and making knowledge accessible to everyone.

Signed September 30, the Taiwan–Alabama High-Tech Scholarship agreement establishes five scholarship positions each year for Alabama students pursuing undergraduate or master’s degrees in high-tech fields in Taiwan.

Fun Fact Friday!

A small gesture can be interpreted very differently across cultures.

Did you know that Bill Gates once sparked a major online debate in South Korea over a simple handshake?

During a 2013 meeting with then-President Park Geun-hye, Gates shook her hand while keeping his other hand in his pocket. In South Korea, some viewed the gesture as overly casual or disrespectful, while others saw it simply as a cultural difference or Gates’s personal habit.

In Korean culture, respect for age, position, and social relationships has traditionally influenced etiquette and interpersonal communication.

We recently visited Park Crossing High School, the only high school in Montgomery currently offering Mandarin instruction! It was wonderful to see students exploring a language that opens doors to new cultures and opportunities.

During our visit, we joined Ms. Teresina Vazquez, World Languages and Seal of Biliteracy Education Specialist at ALSDE, to promote the Seal of Biliteracy and celebrate the value of learning another language.

🧐Time to get to the bottom of it! 🔍

Today’s Lesson: Chinese Slang

Slang: 打破砂鍋問到底 (dǎpò shāguō wèn dàodǐ) 🥘

In Taiwan, we say “打破砂鍋問到底,” meaning “break the pot to ask till the bottom.” The equivalent of “get to the bottom of it.”

Example: He kept asking questions and 打破砂鍋問到底— he needs to know everything! 🔍

🤔 Are you the type to 打破砂鍋問到底 or are you a person who goes with the flow?
Comment 🍲 for “need to know” or 🧘‍♂️ for “go with the flow.”
