NARFE Chapter 92 will not meet this Thursday, January 3, 2019 but will meet February 7, 2019. The members present at the December meeting voted not to meet in January. We wil try one more time in February to determine if Montgomery still wants to keep Chapter 92 operational.

Just a reminder that NARFE Chapter 92 will meet on Thursday, September 7, 2017, at the Crump Senior Center at 1750 Congressman William Dickinson Boulevard. Our social time starts at 9:15, and the meeting begins at 9:45.

Our special guest speaker will be Susan Segrest with the Central Alabama Aging Consortium, which coordinates a whole range of services to seniors in Montgomery, Autauga and Elmore Counties. It's part of a statewide network that provides all kinds of services, including health, nutrition, recreation, and social services for older citizens and those with disabilities, including dementia and Alzheimer's . The goal is to promote independence and to improve their quality of life.

Susan will have plenty of handouts to explain all the benefits and services CAAC provides, and for me, that's a good thing. Even when I take notes, half the time I can't read what I wrote. It promises to be an interesting and really enlightening presentation, and one to which all of us can relate in one way or another.

I hope everyone had a great summer and will enjoy this year's Labor Day holiday and festivities.

And I look forward to seeing you next Thursday.

Sincerely,

George Noblin

Chapter 92 will not meet in June. With the availability of the long Memorial Day weekend, this is the time many folks schedule vacation trips, and quite a few of our members have indicated that they will not be able to attend for various reasons. Of course, we always want to have a good turnout to hear our guest speakers, who graciously give us their time and provide some valuable information.

We will reconvene at our regularly scheduled first Thursday in July, which is July 6.

I hope your have a nice Memorial Day weekend and safe travel if you will be leaving town. Look forward to seeing you on July 6.

Sincerely,

George Noblin
President, Chapter 92

Just a reminder that Chapter 92 will meet on Thursday, May 4, 2017, at the Crump Senior Center at 1750 Congressman William Dickinson Boulevard. Or social time begins at 9:15, and we will start our meeting at 9:45.

One of favorite organizations is the Montgomery Council on Aging (MACOA), and it has been one of our two Benevolent Fund recipients for several years. Pam Goodwin, the enthusiastic and experienced Director of Senior Services for MACOA, will join us and bring us up to date on what's going with that great organization and the services they are offering seniors. She has been with MACOA for 17 years and will certainly have something of interest to all of us.

The Alabama NARFE Federation Convention was a great success, based on the reaction of attendees from all over the state. It was a huge effort requiring a lot of hands on deck from throughout the Seventh District, and especially our own Chapter 92. I thank all members of our chapter for supporting the convention financially with our chapter ad and support for the Alzheimer's and F.E.E.A. raffles, and a special thanks to David Mills, Shotsie Jones, Howard Jones, Eloise Blake, Marie Vandevander, Lula Crosby, Geraldine Carter, and William Betts for providing some needed "hands on deck" to get us through the convention.

While it turned out to be an enjoyable and interesting affair, it's good to get back to a simple chapter meeting with a little less fanfare, although I do miss the breakfast buffet!

Look forward to seeing you next Thursday.

Sincerely,

George Noblin
President, Chapter 92

Just a reminder that Chapter 92 will meet on Thursday, April 6, 2017, at the Crump Senior Center at 1750 Congressman William Dickinson Boulevard. Our social time begins at 9:15, with the meeting to start at 9:45.

We are all in for a treat because we have a return visit by Dr. Steven LoBello, distinguished professor in the Psychology Department at Auburn Montgomery. He is a great speaker, and when he was last with us he gave us some valuable information on diabetes. This time he is going to discuss the problems and impact of arthritis, and that is something that affects many seniors. In fact, I am reminded of it, as I type this, because I have arthritis in my hands. (Some may suspect that I also have it in my brain.)

Just out of curiosity, I checked a web site where Dr. LoBello was rated by some of his students. Words like “awesome”, “great”, and “cool” were used to describe him as a teacher. One student said that his classes fill up the same day they open normally. I know that you will not want to miss him.

As rare as it was, I hated to miss our last meeting, but I thank David Mills for stepping up and stepping in. After two surgeries, and several complications, I am finally working my way back to some sense of normality. As I told my nephew recently, I can’t remember when I ever had more pain and discomfort for a longer period of time than I have had the last two months. It’s not my nature to advertise my problems, but at last I think I am on the mend.

Look forward to seeing you next Thursday.

Sincerely,

George Noblin

Just a reminder that NARFE Chapter 92 will meet this Thursday, March 2, 2017, at the Crump Senior Center on William Dickinson Boulevard. As usual, our social time will begin at 9:15 with coffee and refreshments, and the meeting begins at 9:45.

We have an interesting speaker lined up in Corporal Greg Dixon of the Montgomery Police Department. He is going to talk to us about safety for seniors. It's a subject that is of considerable concern to all of us, and it covers the whole range of safety issues. Corporal Dixon has appeared before a number of other organizations and has always been well received. I think we will find that there will be something of particular interest to each of us, and certainly some important information that we should know and can use.

The weather has been up and down, as we usually see this time of the year, but I hope that all of you are well.

I look forward to seeing you next Thursday. We will have both F.E.E.A. and Alzheimer's raffle tickers available. Of course, the causes advanced by both of these organizations are extremely worthy, but the prizes to be award by each, big screen TV sets, are really nice and expensive. The drawing will be on the final morning of the NARFE Federation Convention, which we are hosting, and you don't have to be present to win.

Sincerely
George Noblin

Just a reminder that Chapter 92 will meet on Thursday, February 2, 2017, at the Crump Senior Center at 1750 Congressman William Dickinson Boulevard. Our social time begins at 9:15, and the meeting starts at 9:45.

Since "The Tax Man Cometh" in a few months, we all want to be armed with exactly what we need to know in preparing those sometimes troublesome IRS forms, and what better person to steer us down the right path than Roget Horton, our favorite tax expert, who has helped us so often the past. Roger will be on hand to give us what we need to know about changes in the tax code, forms we need to file, etc., and with his long experience in the Tax Aid Program of AARP, he especially knows the needs of folks in our age group.

In the meantime, I hope that 2017 is off to a good start for everybody.

Remember, we host the Alabama NARFE Federation Convention right here in Montgomery, April 18-20, 2017, and it's going to be a good one. We want to have a big representation from Chapter 92. If you have not registered for the convention, forms will be available at the meeting, and you are welcomed to serve as a delegate or alternate as well.

I look forward to seeing you next Thursday.

Just a reminder that Chapter 92 kicks off the New Year with our meeting on Thursday, January 5, 2017, at the Crump Community Center at 1750 Congressman William Dickinson Boulevard. Our social time begins at 9:15, with the meeting to start at 9:45.

We will start 2017 with a report from one of our favorite organizations, Brantwood Children's Home, which Chapter 92 has been supporting for a number of years through our Benevolent Fund. It has been a while since we have an had any news from Brantwood, and we have the best person possible to tell us all about what's happening there. Krystal Floyd, Director of Development for the Children's Home, is anxious for us to hear the latest at a place that specializes in good works, gets results and has changed the lives of countless young people for the better. She has quite a resume, which includes work at colleges and universities around the country, including Tuskegee University.

I hope everybody had a joyous Christmas, including a nice mix of holiday parties and worship services for this very special season. And, of course, let's all make 2017 a great year!

Look forward to seeing you next Thursday.

Sincerely,

George Noblin

We have secured our regular room (the Training Room) in the Crump Center next Thursday, Nov. 17, at 10 a.m. for our planning meeting for the Alabama NARFE Federation Convention were are hosting next April. As I have indicated, some initial steps have been taken regarding reserving the Embassy Suites Hotel and at least one of the dinners. There are a host of other things we need to talk about and do prior to the convention and once it begins. We have the room booked until 11:30, if we need it, but we can probably cover everything in an hour.

At the last Federation Board meeting, several of the Board members expressed an interest in joining us for the meeting, and I am inviting them and the leadership of the other chapters in District 7 to attend if they can.

I would have preferred an earlier meeting date, but the General Election cycle has taken an enormous amount of my time, with 10 and 12-hour days, nights, holidays, and weekends, which hopefully will subside when we do the final count of Provisional Ballots next Tuesday. We had a huge turnout on Election Day, which is great, but it also adds to the workload with short deadlines.

Look forward to seeing you next Thursday. I guess we don't have to worry about rain, but we sure do need some.

Sincerely,

George Noblin
President, Chapter 92
