Landmarks Foundation and Old Alabama Town are pleased to announce that they have invited the River Region Rainbow Chorus to lead a “Freedom Song” singalong in observance of Juneteenth.
The Singalong will be from 11 a.m. - 12 noon, Saturday, June 20th, in the Lucas Tavern in Old Alabama Town, 301 Columbus Street, downtown Montgomery. Admission is free, and the event is open to the Public.
The songs included in the Singalong have been curated by the Chorus’ Director, Wes Tallon, from historical records documenting those which were sung beginning with the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. The curated list includes “Blowin’ in the Wind” by Bob Dylan which was sung by Peter, Paul and Mary at the March on Washington when Martin Luther King, Jr., made his “I Have a Dream” speech. Other songs include “Lift Every Voice and Sing”; “ People Get Ready”; Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen”; for a total of 17 selected and relevant numbers. Lyric sheets will be available.
The Rainbow Chorus is a community chorus composed of LGBTQ+, family, friends and like-minded individuals with the purposes of affirming positive perceptions of LGBTQ+ persons; combating fear and hatred; encouraging compassion; celebrating life; and making good music. Now in its fourth concert season, the Rainbow Chorus sings throughout the River Region at public events and performs its original themed concerts in September and December. All performances of the Rainbow Chorus have free admission and are open to the Public.
Landmarks Foundation and Old Alabama Town invited the Rainbow Chorus to lead a Christmas Carol Singalong last December in the Lucas Tavern which was a delightful time reminiscent of when caroling was popular.
The Lucas Tavern is the oldest structure preserved in Old Alabama Town and dates back to prior to 1818. Marquis de La Fayette stayed overnight in the Tavern in 1825.
