John "Johnny" Clem was only 12 years old when he fought in the Battle of Chickamauga, which took place September 18-20, 1863 during the Civil War. Clem was born in Ohio in 1851. He joined the 22nd Michigan regiment in 1863 after previously being refused due to his age. Clem earned the nickname "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh" after legend spread that his drum was destroyed during the battle. However, the 22nd Michigan that Clem first appeared on the muster rolls of was formed in August 1862, about 4 months after Shiloh took place. The legend nonetheless persisted, with a song "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh" based on the story. Clem did go on to serve with the regiment with distinction at Chickamauga, where he was decorated and promoted to sergeant for his actions.

Clem continued his career in the Army until his retirement in 1915 as a brigadier general. This carte-de-visite portrait of Clem in his Union military uniform at age twelve was taken at Baker's Art Gallery in Columbus, Ohio in 1863.

*This post has been amended after incorrectly stating that Clem was present at the Battle of Shiloh, and now provides additional information.
