Meet Carolyn 💙

Whether it's caring for her leopard gecko & mud turtles, or dancing with her dance group Dance Without Limits, many of the activities that Carolyn Shelp participates in bring a smile to her face. The most recent activity Carolyn has joined that has made her smile is Dream Court tennis.

Carolyn, a 17-year-old high school senior living in Mobile, Alabama, joined the Dream Court family about a year ago, and since then, she has loved every second spent with us. She is currently working on improving her overhead serve, and her dream tennis goal is to play tennis with Dream Court for a very long time.

When asked what she loved the most about Dream Court, Carolyn happily answered, “I like going to all the practices (in Mobile) and traveling to Montgomery for the Unified Doubles Tournament.”

Her mother, Ronica Shelp, explains that Dream Court has provided Carolyn with a comfortable & fun environment where she can take the opportunity to make new relationships, travel to new places, and, of course, learn how to play tennis! “Dream Court has given Carolyn an activity to look forward to... Carolyn can’t wait to see her tennis friends and to get out on the court. Carolyn isn’t scared to go to the tournaments, either — even though she is a beginner tennis player. Carolyn has FUN and knows the more she participates at the different locations, she will continually meet new players and get to know them better.”

Outside of Dream Court, Carolyn enjoys competing in special Olympics, eating pizza at Mellow Mushroom, and learning about different animals. Her biggest dream for the future is to go to Disney world for the first time and meet Mickey Mouse.

When asked what the most important thing was that she wanted people to know about her, Carolyn responded, “I am really kind.” Carolyn explains that she spends a lot of time at the hospital due to her epilepsy, so she has gained patience and understanding that contribute to her passion for helping others. Whether she is on or off the tennis court, Carolyn always strives to treat people with kindness.

Carolyn has one piece of advice to give to anyone considering trying adaptive tennis for the first time: “It’s okay to be nervous — just try new things so you can see if you like it. Tennis is a lot of fun, and you will make friends.” Carolyn and her family encourage families to give Dream Court a try because it provides a welcoming, joyful environment that helps end the day with a smile just like Carolyn’s.

💙 Toni Nelson at the Cincinnati Tennis Foundation Wheelchair Open

We’re proud of Tony Nelson for representing Dream Court at the USTA Level 3 Cincinnati Tennis Foundation Wheelchair Open in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was another great opportunity for Tony to compete, gain experience, and continue growing as a wheelchair tennis athlete.

One of the unique things about wheelchair tennis is that athletes play on the same courts used by professional athletes, competing at a high level alongside the broader tennis community.

A special thank you to our Dream Court sponsors for their financial support of our athletes. 🎾💙

SPOTLIGHT Inside In

Alyssa Kaplan

When she's not competing for a state championship with Montgomery Academy's tennis team, you'll likely find Alyssa Kaplan on the courts at O'Connor Tennis Center, encouraging Dream Court athletes one swing at a time.

Alyssa began volunteering with Dream Court in 2021 after being introduced to the program by her childhood tennis coach, Dream Court founder Jessica Bamman. What started as a way to give back quickly became one of the most meaningful parts of her tennis journey.

"What surprised me the most about coaching adaptive tennis is how quickly I was able to make deep connections," Alyssa says. "Every time I am at Dream Court, I make a new friend."

One memory stands out. During camp, Alyssa worked with an athlete named Kennedy, who initially didn't want to participate. By approaching her with patience and understanding the next day, Kennedy not only began enjoying tennis but didn't want to leave when camp ended.

As a competitive player, Alyssa says Dream Court taught her to celebrate small victories. "Coaching has changed me as a person by allowing me to see everything from another perspective and stay patient." She encourages others to volunteer because "it will leave a lasting impression on you, keeping your mind open and heart full."

Volunteers like Alyssa -- whose compassion and leadership help every athlete feel welcomed, encouraged, and celebrated -- convert Dream Court's mission from plans & dreams to reality.

💜 A late post, but one that means so much to us.

Dream Court had the privilege of attending the Inaugural Jewell Pitts Memorial Pickleball Tournament because Jewell Pitts was not only a beloved supporter of our mission, but also a cherished Dream Court Board Member.

The tournament was held Friday and Saturday, August 7–8, at Dean Fain Park, where 112 participants came together to play pickleball in Jewell’s memory.

A beautiful tribute was displayed near the registration table, featuring photos of Jewell surrounded by flowers. Guests were also served catered sandwiches and wraps on elegant purple fabric, honoring Jewell’s favorite color. 💜

Opening remarks were shared by Councilman Charles Jinwright, Councilman Ed Grimes, and City of City of Montgomery Parks and Recreation-MGM Board Member Darlene Skier - Future Home Loans before attendees gathered at the fence line for a moving dedication ceremony. Jewell’s loving family unveiled a plaque bearing her photo, and Court 10 was officially dedicated in her honor.

We are deeply grateful to the sponsors, volunteers, City of Montgomery, Alabama Government personnel, and everyone who helped bring this meaningful tournament to life.

It was a beautiful tribute to an even more beautiful person. We look forward to seeing this tradition continue for years to come. 💜
