Thank you to all who attended our first ever Faith in Action Forum. The purpose of the event was to gather faith leaders and the faith based community in one room to talk about what we do as the Continuum of Care, and introduce them to some of our many, many community partner agencies. We had great discussions, a moderated panel discussion, created actionable plans and initiated first steps to make homelessness in Montgomery rare, brief, and non recurring. A special thank you to Trinity Presbyterian Church for their gracious hospitality, and providing us with space to meet. Community is a great thing, community working as one to reach a common goal is even better!

Due to the forecast for extreme cold from Friday, January 30th, 2026, through Sunday, February 1st, 2026, Elmore County has activated the Safer Places program as Warming Stations. These are Warming Stations and not shelters, so citizens must remember to bring all needed supplies such as water, food, snacks, chairs, blankets, phone chargers, and any other supplies. Should citizens have long-term needs, such as homelessness, they should contact Hands on River Region at #211 for assistance.

Yesterday, we completed day two of our annual Point-In-Time Count. While preliminary data shows a very rough estimated increase in those counted and experiencing homelessness in the five county area we serve as the Housing and Urban Development Continuum of Care for AL-504 (Montgomery, Autauga, Elmore, Lowndes, and Bullock Counties), it is important to note the following possible factors…

1. We had a significant increase in participation of volunteers and partner agencies involved in this year’s count, allowing us to cover a much larger area within our community.
2. Much like 2025’s PIT Count, where we also saw an increase from 2024, it was also extremely cold where we had warming centers opened, allowing us the opportunity to count those in a centralized space in the warming centers.

It is also important to remember that the PIT Count is just that, the number of homeless we encounter on a specified point in time. We have seven days from that specific point in time to count those we encounter who are homeless and/or in shelters. That window closes on Monday, February 2nd at 11:59 PM CST.

The PIT Count provides us only a glimpse of the numbers and data of only those physically counted during the specified point in time window. The data collected provides insight into the services needed in the area, and gaps in current services, of our unsheltered neighbors in need so that they may begin the path to housing stability. We look forward to providing the community our final numbers once data has been extrapolated and is complete.

It is also with great excitement that we remind everyone that on Friday, February 16th at the The Salvation Army of Montgomery, AL—serving the River Region ribbon cutting ceremony for their offices and church located on Carter Hill Road, that leadership announced phase 2 of their project (with preliminary renderings) of a proposed new shelter site on the corner of Ann Street and South Highland where their previous church building is located.
