Tuesday evening, we welcomed our 61st 5-week Squadron Officer School (SOS) class at Maxwell AFB. This morning 4 spouses of Captains attending SOS and their 10 children joined us at the Eastchase Chick-fil-A for a "Meet and Greet." The food and fellowship were OUTSTANDING! Following our time there, they joined us at Frazer Church to enjoy the indoor playground, meet the Nursery staff and tour the facility. During the next 4 weeks, we will invite them to join us for Tuesday morning Marriage and Family Leadership classes to discuss the following topics: (1) Facing and Overcoming Challenges Together; (2) Time, Talk and Touch--Keys to Building Marriages that Last a Lifetime; and (3) Character-Centered Parenting.

Squadron Officer School (SOS) Class 23G graduates this Friday, Oct 20, 2023. Seen below are 6 (includes 2 married couples) of the 21 captains that participated in the SOS Military Marriage Elective taught by Mike during each SOS class. These six recently joined Mike for dinner and the movie "Fireproof" (under license form Provident Films) at the Maxwell AFB Faith Chapel. During the evening, they used the movie to observe and discuss the following important topics: Threats to Marriage; Values, Ethics and Actions; A Clash of Values; Communications and Conflict; 5 Stages for Family Team Development; and actions couples can take to strengthen their marriages and families.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FOR THE CONN FAMILY TEAM!

Dear Friends & Family,
Every year holds unique blessings & challenges, and 2022 is at the top! Let’s back up to Christmas 2021. Lisa’s mom passed away in December. It was a blessing that Lisa was able to take care of her during the months preceding her death and all of her 3 children, our 3 children, and her 6 great-grandchildren visited their Gran.

On Dec. 28, our entire household became sick with COVID. Pneumonia soon set in for Lisa and Aimee while Mike and Colten (Aimee’s fiancé) recovered. While the rest of us improved, Aimee got worse most likely due to an autoimmune disease and the weekly meds to treat it. We soon learned about “Long Covid” and were blessed to have a doctor who, well-versed in the complexities of Covid, offered to care for Aimee. Thus began a roller coaster ride like none we’ve ever experienced. Every system in Aimee’s body has come under attack: she had an increased risk of pulmonary embolism which required 2 injections/day. With a heart rate of 145 and a temp that spiked to 104.6, Her liver enzymes increased at an alarming rate, leading to a liver biopsy revealed “Covid inflammation”. Despite daily headaches and fever, Aimee finally had normal labs and has resumed driving and working some from home, however, fatigue, brain fog, and insomnia remain. Despite everything, we feel blessed that it hasn’t been worse and that she was able to stay home thanks to the attention of her doctor. Our prayer is she will not have permanent damage to any of her organs, that she can resume a “normal” life, and that God will use her experience to help others.

For we know that God makes all things work together for good,
for those who love him and have been called
according to his purpose. Romans 8:28.

Mike’s mom in Vicksburg, who will be 93 soon, is having a difficult time with her health. We pray for God’s mercy and favor for her and for us as we face the challenges before us.

Yesterday, Lisa and I finished teaching another Military Marriage Elective for Air Force Captains attending Air University’s Squadron Officer School. The topics covered during the elective were: (1) Why Marriages Fail—A Threat Analysis; (2) Values, Ethics and Actions; and (3) Can We Talk—about Communication and Conflict. During the last topic, Lisa joined me to participate in an excellent “Question and Answer Session.”

Since 2012, an important part of our Family Teams for Life training program has been families serving together to raise funds to help feed and house the homeless in Montgomery. Each year, hundreds of Sam's Club shoppers are greeted with lots of smiles, mints, joy and the true Spirit of Christmas! This year, eight families including 6 military families and 2 local families joined us in ringing bells for the SALVATION ARMY at Sam's Club.

Last Tuesday evening, as Maxwell AFB Chapel Religious Education Volunteers, we helped welcome over a dozen spouses of AF Captains attending Squadron Officer School (SOS) Class 21G. Wednesday morning, 4 spouses with 9 children joined us for a Meet and Greet at the indoor playground at Frazer Church. Wednesday evening, six SOS21G couples with 14 children joined us at Frazer for Chick-fil-A, Blue Bell ice cream and “LOVE Happens,” Session One of the FamilyLife Art of Marriage video study. A BIG THANK YOU to Frazer for hosting our Military Family Teams for Life training seminars and providing free childcare in appreciation for the service and sacrifices military members and their families make to keep us free!
